COL BKB: Syracuse 79, Vermont 56

Buffalo, N.Y. -- Wesley Johnson sparked Syracuse to a quick start Friday and the top-seeded Orange coasted past Vermont 79-56 in the NCAA Tournament's first round.

Top-seeded Syracuse, which had been idle since losing in the quarterfinals of the Big East Conference tournament to Georgetown, jumped on Vermont early and set up a second-round meeting with Gonzaga on Sunday.

The NCAA Tournament went another year without a No. 16 seed defeating a No. 1. Such an upset has never occurred since the tournament was expanded to 64 teams. Kansas and Kentucky won as No. 1 seeds on Thursday and Duke did so earlier Friday.

COL BKB: Syracuse 59, DePaul 57

Rosemont, Ill. -- Wesley Johnson's double-double Saturday helped No. 4 Syracuse rally from an 18-point deficit to a 59-57 road win over DePaul.

Johnson finished with 16 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists for the Orange (21-1, 8-1 Big East). Kris Joseph added 15 points and Rick Jackson had 10.

Will Walker led the Blue Demons (8-13, 1-8) with 21 points, and Mike Stovall and Mac Koshwal added nine each.

Syracuse trailed throughout the game until Scoop Jardine made a layup with under 4 minutes left that was part of a 16-2 Orange surge.

COL BKB: Syracuse 76, Marquette 71

Syrcuse -- Wesley Johnson had 22 points and 15 rebounds Saturday, leading fifth-ranked Syracuse to a 76-71 Big East Conference win over Marquette.

The halftime score was deadlocked at 34, but despite a determined effort, Marquette faced a 62-47 deficit on a jumper by Arinze Onuaku with 8:34 left and could not grab the lead.

Kris Joseph scored 14 with 11 rebounds, Rick Jackson 12 with seven blocked shots and Onuaku 12 points and five rebounds for the Orange (19-1, 6-1), who have won six in a row.

They were helped by a whopping 43-21 rebounding advantage and the Eagles' 38 percent shooting.

COL BKB: Syracuse 87, North Carolina 71

New York -- Wesley Johnson tallied 27 points Friday and No. 24 Syracuse ran off 16 straight points in the second half to shock fourth-ranked North Carolina 87-71.

The traditional powerhouses met in the championship game of the 2K Sports Classic, played in Madison Square Garden. Ohio State won the third-place game earlier in the evening over California.

North Carolina, which suffered its initial loss of the season in five games, surrendered the first eight points of the contest and then came back to take a 39-37 halftime lead.
