Redskins suspend Haynesworth

Ashburn, Va. -- Defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth has been suspended without pay for the rest of the season by the Washington Redskins, the team said Tuesday.

The Redskins issued a release charging Haynesworth, who signed a seven-year, $100 million contract with the team in 2009, with "conduct detrimental to the club."

Haynesworth has been unhappy with the Redskins since Mike Shanahan was hired as the team's coach last January and instituted a new defensive scheme. Haynesworth was late to report to training camp and has appeared in eight of Washington's games this season.

NFL sued over disability payments

Baltimore -- A former Washington Redskins running back is suing the National Football League, saying he is being shortchanged on his disability payments.

Eric Shelton, 27, whose three-year career ended after a helmet-to-helmet hit in a training camp scrimmage, is seeking more than $18,000 a month, the highest disability payment allowed under the league's current collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association, The Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday.

Coach: Haynesworth likely won't be traded

Washington -- Disgruntled Washington Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth probably won't be traded, Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday.

Shanahan told reporters at the team's training facility that there was "a pretty good chance" Haynesworth would still be with the club after the NFL's Tuesday trade deadline passed, The Washington Post reported.

"You just never know," Shanahan said. "There's a pretty good chance, though, that he won't be traded."

Redskins' Portis to miss 4-6 weeks

Ashburn, Va. -- Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis will miss 4-6 weeks with a groin injury, the NFL team said Wednesday.

Portis was injured in the third quarter of Washington's 17-12 win Sunday in Philadelphia. Subsequent examinations revealed a groin separation, Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Wednesday. He said Portis would miss at least a month and possibly six weeks.

Portis, in his ninth NFL season, has rushed for 195 yards this season, including 55 against the Eagles.

He'll be replaced at the top of the depth chart by second-year pro Ryan Torain, who carried 18 times for 70 yards and a touchdown last Sunday.

Washington, 2-2, plays Green Bay, 3-1, at home Sunday.

Report: No damage to Haynesworth's knee

Washington -- An examination Thursday revealed no structural damage to the sore knee of Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, The Washington Post reported.

Haynesworth underwent an MRI Thursday after complaining of soreness in the knee during the past week.

Coach Mike Shanahan has required Haynesworth to pass the team's conditioning test before taking part in training camp workouts, but Haynesworth has been unable to complete the series of running drills in the allotted amount of time.

He failed the test twice last week and has not attempted to pass it since then because of the knee soreness.
