Tessa Worsley wins giant slalom squeaker

Saint Moritz, Switzerland -- Tessa Worley of France nipped surging Finn Tanja Poutianen by one 100th of a second Sunday to win the women's World Cup giant slalom event at St. Moritz Sunday.

Worley won her second consecutive giant slalom with a two-run time of 2 minutes, 10.70 seconds to Poutianen's 2:10.71 and third-place Tina Maze of Slovenia's 2:11.01.

The second-place finish for Poutianen extended her streak of podium performances that included thirds in the previous two World Cup slalom events. "The one-hundredth of a second that separated me from victory is rather annoying, but I skied a good race and I'm satisfied," she said.

COL BKB: San Diego St. 77, San Diego 49

San Diego -- Malcolm Thomas pumped in 20 points and D.J. Gay added 16 Saturday in No. 15 San Diego State's 77-49 rout of San Diego.

After playing a tight first 20 minutes, the Aztecs (10-0) outscored their crosstown rivals 43-21 in the second half.

Kawhi Leonard chipped in with 13 points and 13 rebounds for San Diego State, which is off to the best start in school history.

The Toreros (1-8) were led by Ken Rancifer and Trevor Fuller, who each scored 12 points in the setback.

COL BKB: Syracuse 100, Colgate 43

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Rick Jackson and Dion Waiters teamed up to score 35 points Saturday, fueling No. 7 Syracuse's 100-43 dismantling of Colgate.

Jackson popped in 18 points and Waiters added 17. Brandon Triche had 14 and Scoop Jardine contributed 13 for Syracuse (10-0).

The Orange were so dominating, they were up 46-8 halftime lead.

Colgate (0-8) got 14 points from Joe Hoban in the resounding loss.

NBA: Oklahoma City 97, New Orleans 92

New Orleans -- Kevin Durant made two free throws with 10 seconds remaining Friday to clinch a 97-92 victory for the Oklahoma City Thunder over New Orleans.

The game was deadlocked midway through the fourth quarter but the Thunder eased in front on their way to a second straight win. The Hornets have just four victories in their last 11 contests.

Marco Belinelli made a layup with 49 seconds to play that brought the Hornets within three points and Durant then missed a jumper.

New Orleans went to Belinelli again in an attempt to tie it but he missed a 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining and Durant was fouled after he grabbed the rebound. Durant's two free throws clinched the victory and
left him with 25 points.

Rankin, Smith, Song share LPGA lead

Daytona Beach, Fla. -- Reilley Rankin, Libby Smith and Aree Song held a share of the lead Wednesday after the first of five rounds of the LPGA Tour Qualifying School.

All three fired rounds of 5-under-par 67 on the Legends and Champions courses of PGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Rankin and Song played the Legends course while Smith was on the Champions circuit.

The Top 20 finishers of the qualifying tourney will be rewarded with LPGA Tour cards for 2011.

Knotted in fourth place after 18 holes were Belen Mozo and Pernilla Lindberg (68). One stroke further back were Jimin Jeong and Ayaka Kaneko.

Kaymer, McDowell tie for golf honor

Virginia Water, England -- Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell, who each won a major tournament this year, will share the 2010 golfer of the year honor, the European Tour announced Tuesday.

Kaymer won the PGA Championship and three other tournaments and McDowell had the U.S. Open among this three 2010 titles in tying in a vote of a media panel that decided the player of the year award. It is the first time that the award, first given in 1985, has co-winners.

McDowell, ranked No. 7 in the world, became the first European winner of the U.S. Open since 1970 when he was the only player to end up par or better -- he shot an even par 284 -- and topped Gregory Havret by one stroke.

NBA: Miami 88, Milwaukee 78

Milwaukee -- Dwyane Wade struck for 25 points and collected 14 rebounds Monday, pacing the Miami Heat to their sixth win in seven games, 88-78 over Milwaukee.

Carlos Arroyo contributed 18 points and LeBron James chipped in with 17 points and six rebounds as Miami stayed hot after a rough start to the season that saw them struggle to a 8-7 record.

The Heat got 16 points from Chris Bosh in the victory.

The Bucks, who lost for the eighth time in 10 games, were led by Corey Maggette's 20 points and got 13 points from Brandon Jennings.

COL BKB: Southern Cal 73, Texas 56

Los Angeles -- Nikola Vucevic pumped in 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Sunday, powering Southern California's 73-56 win over No. 20 Texas.

The Trojans (5-4) set the tone midway through the first half when Alex Stevenson's jump shot ignited an 11-2 run, during which USC established a 20-11 lead.

The Trojans held a 35-27 advantage at the break and started the second half with a 13-1 run, capped by Stevenson's jumper, to put the game away.
Stevenson ended with 14 points in the victory.

J'Covan Brown netted 17 off the bench for the Longhorns (6-2), who went down to defeat in their first road game of the season.

Westwood breezes, assures No. 1 status

Sun City, South Africa -- Lee Westwood notched an easy, eight-stroke victory at the Nedbank Golf Challenge Saturday, strengthening his hold as the world's No. 1 golfer.

Westwood fired a 4-under 68 at Sun City, South Africa, to finish at 17-under 271, far ahead of runner-up Tim Clark, who shot a 1-under 71 to end at minus-9.

Westwood began the day up by five shots and proceeded to dominate again, two-putting for birdie at the par-5 ninth to establish and insurmountable seven-shot lead and then cruising home for the victory.

Sharing third place at 8-under 280 were Retief Goosen (68) and Miguel Angel Jimenez (71), while Ernie Els (73) and Ross Fisher (75) ended up knotted for fifth at 5-under 283.

NBA: Orlando 96, Milwaukee 85

Milwaukee -- Andrew Bogut scored 31 points with 18 rebounds in his return to the lineup Saturday and Milwaukee downed depleted Orlando 96-85.

Four members of the Magic, including center Dwight Howard, missed their second straight game due to a stomach virus. All four were sent home after coming down with the malady.

Bogut had missed five games with back spasms. He made 13-of-20 from the field, but could hit just 5-of-16 from the foul line. Brandon Jennings added 27 points.

Orlando made a game of it, even without Howard, Mickael Pietrus, Jameer Nelson and J.J. Redick. The Magic, however, failed in their bid for a sixth straight victory.

Vince Carter led Orlando with 20 points. Quentin Richardson had 16.

Westwood takes 3-shot lead at Sun City

Sun City, South Africa -- World No. 1 Lee Westwood shot an 8-under-par 64 Friday to take a 3-shot lead at the halfway mark of the Nedbank Challenge in Sun City, South Africa.

Westwood was at 12-under 132 at the Gary Player Country Club.
Ross Fisher (68) held second place at 135 .

Padraig Harrington (72), the first-round leader, shared third at 138 with Edoardo Molinari (67) and Miguel Angel Jimenez (69).

Robert Allenby, the defending champion, shot a 70 and was tied for seventh place at 4-under.

Westwood's bogey-free round included back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth and 14th and 15th holes.

COL BKB: Kansas 77, UCLA 76

Lawrence, Kan. -- A free throw by Mario Little with 0.7 seconds to play Thursday gave No. 4 Kansas a dramatic 77-76 victory over UCLA.

Kansas won its 64th straight home game, the longest active such streak in major college basketball, but the Jayhawks had to battle throughout to survive against the Bruins.

The largest lead for either team was six points and that came early in the contest when Kansas had a 14-8 advantage.

Tyshawn Taylor made 1-of-2 foul shots with 29 seconds left to give Kansas a 76-73 lead, but Tyler Honeycutt hit a 3-pointer with just 4 seconds left to tie it.
