Injuries hurt Williams sisters rankings

Daytona Beach, Fla. -- Serena and Venus Williams each dropped another notch in the world women's tennis rankings just as the season-ending WTA Championships get under way.

The Williams sisters will be the only Top 10 players not at the special invitation event, which begins Tuesday in Doha, Qatar. Serena beat Venus in the 2009 WTA Championships final.

Serena and Venus qualified for the 2010 tournament but ended their seasons because of injury. Serena Williams suffered a foot injury that required surgery shortly after she won at Wimbledon. Venus Williams is out with a leg injury.

V. Williams moves to U.S. Open quarters

New York -- Venus Williams reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals Tuesday, downing French Open champion Francesca Schiavone.

The third-seeded American star dispatched Schiavone 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, advancing to take on the winner of Tuesday's evening match between No. 2 seed and defending champion Kim Clijsters and fifth-seeded Australian Samantha Stosur.

Schiavone, a two-time U.S. Open runner-up, forced a first-set tie-breaker but Williams claimed the last two points to win the set.

V. Williams moves to U.S. Open semifinals

New York -- Venus Williams reached the U.S. Open semifinals Tuesday, downing French Open champion Francesca Schiavone.

The third-seeded American star dispatched Schiavone 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, advancing to take on the winner of Tuesday's evening match between No. 2 seed and defending champion Kim Clijsters and fifth-seeded Australian Samantha Stosur.

Schiavone forced a first-set tie-breaker but Williams claimed the last two points to win the set.

V. Williams, Clijsters to meet in semis

New York -- Two-time former champs Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters will face off in the U.S. Open semifinals after both won quarterfinal matches Tuesday.

The third-seeded Williams dispatched Francesca Schiavone 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in the night's first match and Clijsters prevailed over Australian Samantha Stosur 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 to set up a Friday semifinal showdown with Williams.

Clijsters, Venus gain U.S. Open quarters

New York -- Defending champion Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams moved into the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open with fourth-round victories Sunday.

Clijsters decimated former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic 6-2, 6-1, to reach the quarters in her fourth straight U.S. Open appearance.

The Belgian star won 76 percent of the points on Ivanovic's second serve and took 70 of the 115 points played in the match.

Clijsters now moves on to play the winner of Sunday's evening match between fifth-seeded Samantha Stosur and 12th-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva. Clijsters has a 3-0 lifetime record against Stosur and is 11-3 against Dementieva.

V. Williams gains U.S. Open 3rd round

New York -- Venus Williams took advantage of 23 unforced errors Wednesday to brush past Rebecca Marino into the third round of the U.S. Open.

Williams, the third-seeded two-time Open winner, downed her Canadian opponent 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, never surrendering serve en route to her next match, against Luxembourg's Mandy Minella.

Minella prevailed Wednesday over No. 32 seed Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 6-4, 6-0 -- thus denying Williams a chance for a rematch with Pironkova, who had stunned the American star in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon this summer.

Venus Williams up to No. 3 in rankings

Daytona Beach -- Venus Williams moved up one spot to No. 3 in the world women's tennis rankings released Monday.

Williams jumped ahead of Caroline Wozniacki, pushing the Danish player to fourth, in the only changes in the women's Top 10. Williams' ranking point total remained at 5,606 but Wozniacki lost points by skipping the Swedish Open, an event she where finished second in 2009, and totals 5,555 points.

Serena Williams, with 8,475 points, is No. 1 in the world. She's been on top for a total of 110 weeks, which is the seventh most in WTA history.

Jelena Jankovic (5,900 points) is second and, after Venus Williams and Wozniacki, Samantha Stosur (4,890) is fifth.

V. Williams moves to Wimbledon's 4th round

London -- Second-seeded Venus Williams posted a solid win Friday, a day in which every women's singles match at Wimbledon was decided in two sets.

Williams had five service breaks in a 6-4, 6-2 third-round victory over 26th-seeded Alisa Kleybanova. Kleybanova grabbed a 3-1 lead but Williams quickly evened the match, won the final two games of the first set and the first two of the second to establish control.

No. 4-seeded Jelena Jankovic won her first set in 14 minutes and was on the court a total of 57 minutes in dropping 28th-seeded Alona Bondarenko 6-0, 6-3. Jankovic lost four points in the first set, three on unforced errors.

V. Williams cruises to Wimbledon 3rd round

London -- Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin all advanced to Wimbledon's third round with straight-set wins Wednesday.

Williams, No. 2 in the world, blew by Ekaterina Makarova 6-0, 6-4. She took the first set in 25 minutes, yielding only three points on serve in the set and 11 in eight service games overall.

Clijsters, seeded eighth, stopped Karolina Sprem 6-3, 6-2 and didn't drop serve while the 17th-seeded Henin topped Kristina Barrois 6-3, 7-5. Henin fought through 21 unforced errors (against 38 winners) and lost her serve three times.

No. 4-seeded Jelena Jankovic needed three sets to beat Aleksandra Wozniak 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, but 12th-seeded Nadia Petrova breezed past Yung-Jan Chan 6-3, 6-4.

V. Williams among Wimbledon winners

London -- No. 2-seeded Venus Williams rolled to a win Monday but French Open champion Francesca Schiavone was defeated on the first day of Wimbledon.

Williams was 6-3, 6-2 winner over Rossana De Los Rios in a match that took 64 minutes. Williams had just 15 unforced errors against 31 winners. De Los Rios managed just four winners in the match.

Schiavone, seeded fifth, fell to Vera Dushevina 6-7 (0-7), 7-5, 6-1 after nearly 3 hours of play. She converted only three of 14 break-point chances while Dushevina managed six service breaks. Schiavone claimed the French Open this month.

Venus Williams falls in fourth round

Paris -- U.S. star Venus Williams exited the French Open Sunday, falling in the fourth round to No. 19 seed Nadia Petrova in straight sets.

The Russian breezed to a 6-4, 6-3 victory, denying Williams a chance to make the Paris quarterfinals for the first time since 2006.

With the win, Petrova will gain the Round of 8 for the first time in five years. There she will face fifth-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva, who downed South African Chanelle Scheepers 6-1, 6-3.

Also logging a big win Sunday was Belgian star Justine Henin, who triumphed over Maria Sharapova in a match that was completed after being suspended due to darkness Saturday night.

V. Williams wins French second-rounder

Paris -- Second-seeded Venus Williams claimed a straight-set win Wednesday and advanced to the third round of the French Open in Paris.

Williams improved to 28-4 on the year with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Arantxa Parra Santonja. Williams had to overcome 21 unforced errors but didn't suffer a service break in the match.

Flavia Pennetta, seeded No. 14, had the most impressive showing of the early matches Wednesday, ripping past Roberta Vinci 6-1, 6-1 in 57 minutes. Pennetta piled up 30 winners.

No. 19-seeded Nadia Petrova was nearly as sharp, defeating Agnes Szavay 6-1, 6-2 while 26th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova got past Varvara Lepchenko 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 and No. 31-seeded Alexandra Dulgheru topped Timea Bacsinszky 6-4, 6-2.
