United Airlines has recovered from the computer glitch that snarled all flight operations leaving thousands of travelers stranded for hours at the nation’s airports Friday.

United Airlines unveils 'Oprah' plane

Chicago -- United Airlines unveiled a Boeing 757 jet dubbed "The Oprah Winfrey Show Farewell Season Plane" at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

The iconic chat show recently began its 25th and final season.

The plane honoring the series features "Oprah" logos on its fuselage and tail, and "farewell season" decals on the tray tables inside, The Chicago Sun-Times said.

Passengers also are welcomed aboard by Winfrey via video.

U.S. approves United, Continental merger

Washington -- The U.S. Justice Department said Friday it has approved the proposed merger of United Airlines Inc. and Continental Airlines Inc.

In a statement posted on its Web site, the department said approval of the $3 billion merger came after United and Continental agreed to transfer takeoff and landing rights "and other assets at Newark (N.J.) Liberty Airport to Southwest Airlines Co."

The decision clears the way for the merger to be completed within a few weeks, The New York Times reported. United and Continental shareholders are to vote on the merger Sept. 17.

U.S. weighs fines for tarmac delays

Chicago -- U.S. regulators say they will decide whether to fine United Airlines up to $27,500 per passenger for leaving passengers in idling planes more than three hours.

Chicago-based United operated four of the five U.S. flights delayed in May beyond the new limit on tarmac time set by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Delta Air Lines operated the fifth flight, which took off from Atlanta 2 minutes after the three-hour cutoff point, federal data indicated.

The United delays occurred May 26 after thunderstorms halted take-offs and landings at Denver International Airport, United spokeswoman Jean Medina said. Tarmac delays for the four flights ranged from 3 hours, 10 minutes to 4 hours, 41 minutes, DOT data indicated.

United Airlines reports May 2010 operational performance

United Airlines, a wholly-owned subsidiary of UAL Corporation, reported Monday that the total consolidated revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in May increased by 7.5 percent on an increase of 3.3 percent in available seat miles, compared to same period a year earlier.

Due to increase in RPMs, the carrier also witnessed a 3.3 points increase in consolidated passenger load factor to 83.3 percent.

Further, consolidated passenger revenue per available seat (PRASM) is estimated to have increased 25.5 percent to 26.5 percent compared to last year.

The consolidated PRASM for the month is estimated to have jumped 3.2 percent to 4.2 percent from May 2008 period.

Woman left sleeping on plane sues

Ferndale, Mich. -- A Michigan woman who said she was left sleeping on a plane for 4 hours after it landed in Philadelphia is suing United Airlines, her attorney said.

Geoffrey Fieger said his client, Ginger McGuire, 36, of Ferndale, is suing for false imprisonment, infliction of emotional distress and negligence.

McGuire said she was left on the locked plane at Philadelphia International Airport after it arrived from Washington's Dulles International Airport shortly before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, The Detroit Free Press reported Friday.

CNN said United and Trans States Airlines, the carrier that operated the flight, were investigating.

United, Continental agree to merge

In what can be termed as a deal to give rise to the world's largest airline in terms of traffic, United Airlines and Continental Airlines Inc. have reached negotiations and agreed to a merger worth $3 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter.

United offers door-to-door luggage

Chicago -- United Airlines said it would lighten its passengers' load with an offer to ship baggage door-to-door between March 18 and March 29.

Passengers would be allowed up to nine bags -- including skies or golf clubs -- that FedEx would deliver overnight for $25, The Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

The carrier's senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing Jeff Foland said, "with United's overnight Door-to-Door Baggage shipment and delivery service, customers have another great opportunity to travel with added convenience and flexibility."

United Airlines breaks spending logjam

Chicago -- United Airlines' indication it will spend $10 billion on new aircraft could signify a turn in U.S. corporate spending, an industrial market analyst said.

"It's very tentative, but it sounds like businesses are starting to come back and think about investing in plants and equipment," Kenneth Bentsen Jr., president of the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association, told The Washington Post Friday.

The Commerce Department said first quarter spending for commercial facilities had dropped at an annual rate of 36.8 percent. The first quarter decline in corporate investments in transportation equipment was 67 percent, compared to the first three months of 2007, the department said.

United seeks jets from Boeing, Airbus
