Colorado Rockies tie up Tulowitzki

Denver -- Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki has signed a seven-year extension tendered by the Colorado Rockies said to be worth $134 million.

The National League baseball club officially announced the contract Tuesday, the day after several media outlets, including The Denver Post, reported the lucrative deal that will keep Tulowitzki in a Rockies uniform through the 2020 season.

Tulowitzki, 26, had signed a six-year contract in January 2008 after helping the team get to its first-ever World Series in 2007. He voiced high hopes for bringing a world championship to Denver.

Pujols, Cabrera win Silver Slugger Award

New York -- First basemen Albert Pujols of St. Louis and Miguel Cabrera of Detroit were honored with the Silver Slugger Award Thursday.

The award is handed out to the top offensive performer at each position in each league.

Pujols, in his 10th year in the majors, batted .312 with 42 homers and 118 RBI. His home run and RBI totals were tops in the National League. He won the honor for the third straight year and for the sixth time in his career.

Cabrera received the award for the third time after posting a .328 average with 38 homers and 126 RBI.

MLB: Colorado 5, Milwaukee 4

Denver -- A three-run homer by Troy Tulowitzki in the eighth inning Friday rallied the Colorado Rockies to a 5-4 decision over Milwaukee.

Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo took a shutout into the seventh inning, having given up four hits over the first six frames while the Brewers built a 4-1 lead.

Ryan Spilborghs produced an RBI double in the seventh to draw the Rockies within two and they then staged their rally against reliever Kameron Loe (2-3) in the eighth.

Todd Helton walked off Gallardo to open the Colorado eighth and Carlos Gonzalez moved Helton to third with a double.

MLB: Colorado 6, Pittsburgh 3

Pittsburgh -- Troy Tulowitzki singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh Friday, helping Colorado to its sixth win in eight games with a 6-3 decision over Pittsburgh.

The Pirates rallied to tie it in the sixth on a three-run homer from Pedro Alvarez, but Colorado quickly regained the advantage in the seventh. Carlos Gonzalez reached on a two-out single off Chan Ho Park (2-2), moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Tulowitzki's single to center.

Gonzalez tacked on a sacrifice fly RBI and Jason Giambi had an RBI single, both coming in the ninth.

The homer by Alvarez was one of only three hits allowed by winning pitcher Jason Hammel (8-6) over six innings.

Huston Street gave up a hit in the ninth en route to his seventh save.

MLB: Philadelphia 6, Colorado 5

Denver, Oct. 12: Closer Brad Lidge stranded two but got the Philadelphia Phillies' 6-5 win Sunday over the Colorado Rockies in Game 3 of the National League Division Series.

Lidge, who blew a league-high 11 saves during the regular season, induced Rockies Troy Tulowitzki to pop to left to end the game, giving the Rockies a 2-1 edge in the best-of-five divisional series.

In the top of the ninth, Ryan Howard drove in Jimmy Rollins, representing the go-ahead run, with a sacrifice fly. Carlos Ruiz knocked in two runs, while Chase Utley homered and scored twice for the defending World Series champions.

Carlos Gonzalez collected three hits, including a homer, and scored three times for the Rockies. Garrett Atkins added two RBI.

MLB: Colorado 4, LA Dodgers 3

Los Angeles, Oct. 3 -- Troy Tulowitzki's two-run homer gave Colorado a cushion Friday and the Rockies kept their division title hopes alive by downing the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3.

Colorado moved within a game of the Dodgers in the race for the National League West pennant. The teams will play Saturday and Sunday, with the Rockies needing to win both of those contests to grab the division crown.

Both teams will be in the playoffs because the one that does not win the division will be the National League's wild-card team.

Tulowitzki's home run, his 32nd of the season, gave Colorado a 4-1 lead and the Rockies survived a troublesome bottom of the seventh.

MLB: Colorado 10, Milwaukee 6

Denver, Oct. 1: Todd Helton hit a two-run homer to give Colorado the lead Wednesday and the Rockies moved to the brink of a playoff berth with a 10-6 win over Milwaukee.

Colorado eliminated San Francisco from playoff contention and took a four-game lead over Atlanta in the National League wild-card race with four games remaining.

A win by the Rockies or a loss by the Braves during the final four days of the season will give Colorado its second post-season berth in three years.

Colorado is also still in the hunt for the National League West title, having started the night 3 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.

MLB: Colorado 4, St. Louis 3

Denver, Sept. 27: Todd Helton, Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez had two hits and one RBI apiece Sunday, helping the Colorado Rockies to a critical 4-3 win over St. Louis.

The win helped Colorado stay 2 1/2 games ahead of Atlanta in the NL wild-card chase.

Helton's RBI single snapped a 3-3 tie with one out in the bottom of the fifth.

Winner Jorge De La Rosa (16-9) gave up three runs and four hits in five innings with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Closer Huston Street earned his 34th save, despite giving up two hits in the top of the ninth.

Albert Pujols led St. Louis with a three-run third-inning double. Julio Lugo added two hits for the Cardinals, who had clinched the NL Central with a 6-3 victory Saturday.

MLB: San Diego 5, Colorado 4

Denver, Sept. 25: RBI singles by Nick Hundley and Tony Gwynn completed a San Diego rally in the eighth inning Thursday and gave the Padres a 5-4 win over Colorado.

The Rockies let an early 3-0 lead get away and fell six games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the race for the National League West title.

Colorado still leads both Atlanta and San Francisco by 3 1/2 games in the NL wild-card chase.

Troy Tulowitzki staked Colorado to its early lead with a three-run homer in the first, but the Padres fought back to tie it through seven innings. Chase Headley opened the eighth with a single off Joe Beimel (1-6) and moved to second on a sacrifice by Will Venable.

MLB: San Francisco 10, Colorado 2

San Francisco, Sept. 16: Barry Zito turned in a solid seven innings while four Giants chipped in two RBI apiece in San Francisco's 10-2 drubbing of Colorado Tuesday.

Zito (10-12) gave up two runs on five hits and struck out nine to pull the Giants to within two games of Colorado in the National League wild-card chase.

Juan Uribe, Travis Ishikawa, Bengie Molina and Aaron Rowand each had two RBI as the Giants outhit the Rockies 10-5.

Ubaldo Jimenez (13-11) took the loss for only the second time in his past dozen starts. He lasted 2 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs -- six earned -- on six hits.

Troy Tulowitzki homered for the Rockies, who have lost four consecutive games.

MLB: Colorado 5, New York Mets 2

Denver, Sept. 3: Jason Giambi, in his first Colorado appearance, singled in the go-ahead runs in the eighth Wednesday to give the Rockies a 5-2 win over the New York Mets.

Colorado signed Giambi to a minor league contract after he was released by Oakland and the Rockies called him up this week.

With the score tied at 2-2 and the bases loaded with one out in the eighth, Giambi was called on to hit for Clint Barmes. He swung at the first pitch from Brian Stokes (1-4) and singled to center, driving in Troy Tulowitzki and Brad Hawpe.

Yorvit Torrealba followed with an RBI single and the Rockies held on for their second straight victory.

Colorado remained one game in front of San Francisco in the race for the National League wild-card berth.

MLB: Colorado 5, LA Dodgers 4

Denver, Aug. 26: Troy Tulowitzki singled home Ian Stewart from third in the 10th inning Tuesday, giving Colorado a dramatic and crucial 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers, who once were running away with the National League West race, saw their lead over Colorado cut to two games. The Rockies also began the night with a four-game advantage over San Francisco in the NL wild-card race.

Los Angeles rallied from a two-run deficit to tie it in the ninth but left the bases loaded when Russell Martin flew out to center to end the inning.

The Rockies won it one frame later when James McDonald (3-3) was unable to retire a batter.
