Torii Hunter

MLB: Los Angeles Angels 7, Kansas City 2

Kansas City, Mo. -- Torii Hunter's two-run single in the first gave Los Angeles a quick start Wednesday and the Angels coasted to a 7-2 win over Kansas City.

Hunter scored the third run of the first inning on a fielder's choice grounder by Mike Napoli and added a solo homer in the seventh that gave the Angels a 7-1 lead.

Bobby Abreu contributed to the 14-hit attack with a first-inning double, making him just one of four players in major league history with 500 doubles, 250 home runs and 350 stolen bases. The other three are Barry Bonds, Rickey Henderson and Craig Biggio.

Scott Kazmir (4-5) collected only his second win in seven starts, allowing a run on five hits over 5 2/3 innings.

MLB: Los Angeles Angels 5, Boston 0

Anaheim, Calif., Oct. 9: John Lackey allowed four hits over 7 1/3 innings Thursday and Torii Hunter hit a three-run homer to give the Los Angeles Angels a 5-0 playoff win over Boston.

It was only the second victory for the Angels over the Red Sox in their last 14 post-season meetings.

In the opening game of their American League Division Series, Lackey collected his first post-season victory in seven years. He walked just one batter, struck out four and threw 114 pitches before being relieved by Darren Oliver with one out in the eighth and a runner on second base.

MLB: Los Angeles Angels 5, Texas 0

Aanaheim, Calif., Oct. 1: Matt Palmer gave up a single to the game's first batter Wednesday and Los Angeles Angels' pitchers did not allow another hit in blanking Texas 5-0.

Julio Borbon singled off Palmer to open the contest and was promptly thrown out trying to steal second. The Rangers went on to lose for the 12th time in 17 games in a late-season slump that took them out of playoff contention.

The Western Division-champion Angels won their fourth in a row and are set to meet Boston in the first round of the playoffs next week.

Los Angeles took the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Torii Hunter, who came in to score on a base hit by Juan Rivera.

Most of the Los Angeles starters were replaced in the late innings.

MLB: Los Angeles Angels 3, Seattle 0

Anaheim, Calif. Sept. 11: John Lackey threw his first shutout in two years Thursday -- his fourth against Seattle -- carrying the Los Angeles Angels to a 3-0 victory over the Mariners.

Lackey (10-7) struck out seven, gave up five hits and threw 111 pitches. It was the 14th complete game and eighth shutout in Lackey's eight-year career, all of it spent with the Angels.

Los Angeles won its third straight and moved five games in front of the idle Texas Rangers in the race for the American League West pennant.

Torii Hunter gave the Angels the lead in the fourth with a two-run homer and Erick Aybar added an RBI double in the seventh.

Ryan Rowland-Smith (3-3) gave up all three runs on 10 hits over seven innings to take the loss.

MLB: Los Angeles Angels 6, Seattle 3

Anaheim, Calif. Sept. 10: A three-run double by Kendry Morales highlighted a four-run first Wednesday and started the Los Angeles Angels on their way to a 6-3 victory over Seattle.

Jered Weaver struck out eight in winning for the third time in his last four decisions.

Los Angeles captured its second straight and stayed 4 1/2 games in front of Texas for the lead in the American League West. Those two teams will meet seven times in a 13-day stretch beginning Sept. 18.

Weaver (15-5) allowed two runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He left the game with a 4-2 lead and Juan Rivera added some insurance with a two-run homer in the eighth.

MLB: LA Angels 5, Toronto 4

Toronto, Aug. 21: Homers by Aaron Hill and Vernon Wells helped Toronto build a five-run lead Friday and the Blue Jays survived a shaky ninth to edge the Los Angeles Angels 5-4.

Los Angeles lost its second in a row after having won eight out of nine.

The Blue Jays scored four times in the first, with Hill hitting a solo homer and Jose Bautista contributing a two-run single.

Wells then gave Toronto a 5-0 advantage with a home run in the third and the Blue Jays took a shutout into the seventh.

Marc Rzepczynski (2-3) worked 6 1/3 innings to get the win, giving up just three hits to the normally high-scoring Angels.

MLB: Los Angeles Angels 5, Cleveland 4

Cleveland, Aug. 18: Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter combined for five of the Angels' 13 hits Tuesday to lead Los Angeles to a 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians.

The two Angels had both missed significant time with injuries, but Guerrero was 3-for-5 with a run scored and Hunter 2-for-5 for LA, which improved to 26-8 since July 10.

Trevor Bell (1-0) got his first major league win in his second-ever start, holding Cleveland to three runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Brian Fuentes earned his 35th save of the season.

Every player in the Angels' starting lineup Tuesday now has a batting average of at least .300.

Asdrubal Cabrera had four hits and an RBI for the Indians, who have lost four of six. Jhonny Peralta added two hits and two RBI.

Cruz added to AL All-Star team

New York -- Major League Baseball has named Texas Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz to replace the injured Torii Hunter of the LA Angels on the AL All-Star team.

Hunter was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained right side.

He has been playing hurt since crashing into the wall at Dodger Stadium on May 24, a 10-7 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He underwent an MRI exam on Wednesday.

"I didn't want to go on the DL -- that's not me -- but maybe it's for the best," Hunter said on the Los Angeles Web site Friday.

Cruz, the next-highest vote getter among his major league peers, became the 27th first-time All-Star among the 66 players to play in Tuesday's game at Busch Stadium.

MLB: Los Angeles Angels 9, Texas 4

Anaheim, Calif. July 7: Jeff Mathis had a three-run homer and Juan Rivera had three hits, two RBI and a run scored Monday to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 9-4 win over Texas.

Jered Weaver (9-3) went seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and one walk to get the win for the Angels, who took over sole possession of first place in the AL West with their third straight win and their 10th victory in their last 13 games.

Guerrero had two hits and four RBI. His monster homer into the left field seats capped the big uprising.

Torii Hunter had two hits and three RBI, Bobby Abreu had three hits and one RBI, and Chone Figgins scored three times with two hits and one RBI. Maicer Izturis had three hits and Kendry Morales two for the Angels, who had 17 hits in just their second win in five games.

The winner was reliever Jason Bulger (3-1).

Baltimore's Adam Jones had three hits and two RBI. Brian Roberts had two hits and one RBI and Nick Markakis had one RBI for the Orioles, who have lost three of four.

MLB: Texas 9, LA Angels 7

Arlington, Texas July 1: Hank Blalock's second homer of the game Wednesday, a two-out, two-run shot in the ninth, lifted Texas to a wild 9-7 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

The bizarre contest saw the Angels overcome a six-run deficit, even though they made two key base running mistakes in the late innings.

What began as a pitcher's duel between Kevin Millwood of Texas and Jered Weaver of the Angels deteriorated when the Rangers scored five times in the sixth without the benefit of a home run.

MLB: Los Angeles Angels 9, San Diego 1

Anaheim, Calif. June 14: Torii Hunter hit three homers and Joe Saunders gave up a run and four hits in 8 1/3 innings Saturday in the LA Angels' 9-1 inter-league win over San Diego.
