Baghdatis stays alive at Pilot Pen

New Haven -- Top-seeded Marcos Baghdatis survived a rocky first set Wednesday to defeat Juan Ignacio Chela and reach the quarterfinals at the Pilot Pen.

In the final tuneup for the U.S. Open, Baghdatis downed Chela 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal meeting with either Sergiy Stakhovsky or Tommy Robredo.

Baghdatis has not won a tournament since the final warmup for the Australian Open this year. He lost to Roger Federer in the semifinals of last week's Masters series event in Cincinnati and fell to David Nalbandian in the final of the Legg Mason Classic in Washington.
