Cardinals to bring La Russa back

St. Louis -- Tony La Russa, No. 3 on the all-time win list for major-league managers, will return for a 16th season of leading the St. Louis Cardinals, the team said Monday.

La Russa, 66, agreed to a one-year contract with an option for 2012.
He has been the Cardinals' manager since 1996, leading the team to seven division titles and the 2006 World Series championship.

"We are excited to have Tony returning and are looking forward to 2011," Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt, Jr. said "He has guided the team in one of the greatest eras in Cardinals history and we are pleased that he will continue that leadership next season."

La Russa to return as Cardinals' manager

St. Louis -- Tony La Russa will return as St. Louis Cardinals manager next season, the team announced Monday.

"It's a great place to manage," La Russa said at a news conference. "Selfishly, I wanted to be the guy that enjoys it again in 2010."

The Cardinals won the World Series under La Russa in 2006.

La Russa has managed in the major leagues for 31 years. He previously managed the Chicago White Sox and Oakland Athletics. Overall, his teams have a record of 2,552-2,217.

The Cardinals also announced that former home run slugger Mark McGwire, who retired as a player in 2001, was hired as hitting coach, replacing Hal McRae. It is McGwire's first coaching position.

Tony La Russa coming back to St. Louis

St. Louis -- The St. Louis Cardinals are set to announce that Tony La Russa will return as manager next season, ESPN reported Sunday.

The team has scheduled a news conference for Monday morning to make the announcement, the report said.

ESPN said La Russa received a multiyear contract. La Russa refused to confirm or deny the report.

"We're getting closer," the 65-year-old La Russa said Sunday. "I can't tell you anything yet."

The report also said the team has fired Hal McRae has hitting coach and will replace him with former Cardinals' slugger Mark McGwire.

ESPN said La Russa's contract is for one year plus a mutual option for 2011.
