MLB: Cleveland 6, Detroit 5

Cleveland, Aug. 1: Jamey Carroll singled in Jhonny Peralta from second with nobody out in the 13th inning Friday, giving the Cleveland Indians a 6-5 victory over Detroit.

The Tigers wasted a series of chances in extra innings before Cleveland made short work of Casey Fien (0-1), who was called up from Class AAA Toledo last week and was the eighth Detroit pitcher to see action in the game.

Peralta doubled on a 1-2 pitch to open the inning and Carroll singled to right on a 1-1 offering, ending the game.

The Tigers had their lead in the American League Central reduced to 1 ½ games over the Chicago White Sox. Minnesota, which fell to the Los Angeles Angels Friday, is two games behind.

MLB: Cincinnati 7, Cleveland 3

Cleveland, June 28: Homer Bailey escaped a shaky effort Saturday, yielding three runs and three hits in five innings, when the Cincinnati Reds beat Cleveland 7-3.

Bailey (1-0) got his first victory since Sept. 30, 2006, despite walking seven batters and throwing two wild pitches in five innings.

Jay Bruce had two RBI -- one on a second-inning solo homer. Jerry Hairston Jr. had three hits and one RBI.

Joey Votto and Chris Dickerson both had two hits and one RBI, while Laynce Nix had two runs and two hits for the Reds, who had lost five of six.
