Virginia 'Best State for Business in 2011' -- CNBC study

Virginia has been selected as the best state for business for the year 2011 by the CNBC news channel. Last year’s winner Texas ranked second in the ongoing tussle between the two states as they continue to capture the top slots alternatively every year.

COL BKB: Texas 76, Lamar 55

Austin, Texas -- Cory Joseph and Jordan Hamilton both had 16 points Wednesday and No. 20 Texas held Lamar to 18 field goals in downing the Cardinals 76-55.

Lamar shot just 25 percent for the game despite taking an 11-5 lead during the first 3 minutes.

Tristan Thompson chipped in 11 points and 13 rebounds for Texas (6-1), which has won three straight since its lone loss of the season to Pittsburgh.

Kendrick Harris led Lamar (4-3) with 13 points.

The Longhorns built a 34-25 lead at intermission and then went on a 12-0 run in the early moments of the second period.

New Braunfels turkey products recalled

Washington -- Texas meat processor New Braunfels Smokehouse Co. said it was recalling 2,600 pounds of turkey that failed a U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection.

The turkey products were mostly produced for a private label, Stegall Smoked Turkey Inc., which has yet to sell most of the meat involved in the recall, the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram reported Monday.

The remaining 263 pounds in the lot the USDA said was possibly contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes was distributed as New Braunfels Smokehouse Sliced Smoked Turkey, lot 2210, and New Braunfels Honey-Glazed Spiral Sliced Smokehouse Hickory Smoked Boneless Breast of Turkey, lot 2180.

Halloween costume sparked campus lockdown

College Station, Texas -- Police at Texas A&M University released a report revealing a recent lockdown was caused by a student carrying a replica AK-47 as part of a Halloween costume.

The (Bryan) Eagle said it obtained a police report revealing the man spotted by a bus driver and three students Oct. 28 was a student and U.S. Marine who had been allowed to borrow the plastic gun by a gunnery sergeant.

The campus was locked down for a Code Maroon alert from about 3:30 p.m. until just before 6 p.m.

The police report said officers located the 28-year-old student and no charges were filed. It was unclear whether the man faced disciplinary action from the school.

787 Dreamliner makes emergency landing

Laredo, Texas -- Boeing Co. said a test flight of the long-delayed 787 Dreamliner ended with an emergency landing in Laredo, Texas.

The flight crew reported smoke in the rear of the cabin, made an emergency landing at Laredo International Airport, then exited the plane using slides, CNN reported Wednesday.

"We are continuing to gather data regarding this event. It's too early to tell what may have gone wrong," said Boeing spokeswoman Lori Gunter.

Gunter said all 787 Dreamliner test flights had been canceled "until we understand the event."

The company has over 850 orders for the 787 Dreamliner, which is still in the testing stage nearly three years beyond its original delivery date.

Texas food-processing plant tests positive for fatal bacteria

A closed food processing plant in Texas tested positive for listeria, a foodborne pathogen, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.

Oklahoma sues online travel firms

Oklahoma City -- Oklahoma got in line behind Florida and San Antonio, Texas, in an effort to collect taxes from out-of-state travel companies, court papers show.

The state filed a lawsuit against a variety of online travel firms, including Priceline.com, Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity, to recoup millions of dollars in taxes the state says it is owed for hotel room bookings, The Oklahoman reported Wednesday.

The lawsuit says the online companies use a variety of methods to avoid paying their full share to the state, including paying taxes and a wholesale tax rate, the newspaper said.

Texas reports rise in whooping cough cases

Whooping cough cases are on the rise again in Texas and the residents are being advised to get vaccinated. Health officials are particularly concentrating on young children, as the number of patients continues to rise in the state.

Results of Texas food plant samples to be declared next week

The results of samples taken from SanGar Produce and Processing Company are expected to come anytime next week. Meanwhile, the Texas Food Processing Company was closed down by the state health authorities after the contaminated celery from the plant was suspected to be behind the recent deaths of four persons.

Forecast: Texas on edge of drought

College Station, Texas -- Texas, facing a warm, dry winter and with drought conditions already beginning, may be about to enter its next serious drought, a climatologist warns.

Texas A&M University Professor John Nielsen-Gammon, who also serves as the state climatologist, says drought conditions are developing in the Texas Panhandle and the Big Bend region and that in East Texas along the Louisiana border drought conditions have already been present for some time, a university release reported Thursday.

COL FB: Arkansas 24, Texas A&M 17

Arlington, Texas -- Ryan Mallet fired three first-half touchdowns Saturday and No. 13 Arkansas held on for a 24-17 victory over Texas A&M.

Mallet's second scoring strike was a 71-yarder to Cobi Hamilton that broke a 7-7 tie and gave the Razorbacks (4-1) the lead for good with 4:18 left in the first quarter.
Mallet ended the day 27-of-38 passing for 311 yards, the three touchdowns and an interception in the non-conference victory.

Hamilton made five receptions for 98 yards and Knile Davis racked up 82 yards rushing on 10 carries for Arkansas.

The Aggies (3-2) were plagued by turnovers, losing the ball three times on fumbles.

COL FB: Texas 34, Rice 17

Houston -- Tre' Newton rushed for three touchdowns and gained 61 yards Saturday to help No. 4 Texas bounce Rice 34-17 in the season openers for both schools.

The sophomore carried the ball 18 times for the Longhorns (1-0), who reached the BCS National Championship Game last year only to be defeated by Alabama.

Garrett Gilbert succeeded Colt McCoy at quarterback, connecting on 14-of-23 passes for 172 yards. Four of them went to Malcolm Williams, who racked up 77 yards.

Texas put the game away in the second quarter when Rice quarterback Taylor McHargue fumbled while being sacked and Keenan Robinson picked up the loose ball and ran 11 yards into the end zone.
