Lake Buena Vista, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays have traded shortstop Jason Bartlett to San Diego for a pair of relief pitchers, the infielder confirmed Wednesday.
The deal was made during baseball's annual winter meetings in Florida.
Bartlett said in a text message to the St. Petersburg Times that he was excited about the trade, in which relievers Cesar Ramos and Adam Russell have been dealt by the Padres.
"I knew it was eventually coming," Bartlett wrote. "I prepared myself with my family. We are very happy and excited to start a new chapter of my career."
After a sterling 2009 season in which he hit .320 with 14 home runs and 66 RBI, Bartlett struggled last season. His production fell off to .254 with four home runs and 47 RBI.

St. Petersburg, Fla. -- Three homeless people plotted to cheat fans parking at a playoff game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers, St. Petersburg, Fla., police said.
Anthony Pawle, 54, Garry Townsend, 47, and Abigail Hill, 26, allegedly took over a vacant garage near Tropicana Field Tuesday and posted signs advertising parking spaces for $20, police told the St. Petersburg Times.
Officers discovered the scheme quickly and it appeared no one parked at the garage. The three, listed as transients in jail records, were arrested on trespassing charges.
"The property owner had no idea, nor was permission given to park vehicles upon this property," arrest affidavits stated.

St. Petersburg, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays have placed reliever Jason Isringhausen on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow ailment.
The veteran right-hander had season-ending elbow surgery in 2008 while with the St. Louis Cardinals, signed with the Rays in spring training and started this season on the disabled list.
He left a relief appearance against the Washington Nationals Saturday after throwing just 2/3 of a inning and Sunday went back on the DL.
Manager Joe Maddon said on the team's Web site the pitcher would undergo magnetic resonance imaging Monday.
""It's an elbow strain," Maddon said. "We won't really know until we get the MRI. I just know he didn't feel real good."

St. Petersburg, Fla -- Hopes that the Tampa Bay Rays could build a new baseball stadium at a Pinellas County, Fla., landfill site have been dealt a blow, county officials say.
Environmental engineers say building a ballpark at the shuttered Toytown landfill, one of several potential sites on a list of possible stadium locations, would require pilings to be driven so deeply they could come close to the limestone and fresh water aquifer that feeds into Tampa Bay, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported Tuesday.
Bob Hauser, Pinellas County's solid waste director, said officials want to avoid driving pilings so deeply into the clay near the bay, asserting it could pose environmental hazards.
