Williams sisters out, Clijsters advances

Cincinnati, Aug. 13: Flavia Pennetta beat Venus Williams and Sybille Bammer stunned Serena Williams Thursday in the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open in Cincinnati.

Venus Williams was seeded No. 1 and her sister No. 2 in the hard-court event at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

The winners moved on to the quarterfinals.

Italian Pennetta, who won a title in Los Angeles last week, outlasted Venus Williams 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.

Bammer -- an Austrian ranked 29th in the world -- advanced with a 7-5, 6-4 decision in a 1-hour, 35-minute battle with Serena Williams, the reigning Wimbledon, Australian Open and U.S. Open champion.

Rain suspends semifinal action at Prague

Prague, Czech Republic -- Rain Saturday forced the suspension of semifinal action at the Prague Open.

Second-seeded Austrian Sybille Bammer was ahead of third-seeded Iveta Benesova 3-0 in the first set when the rain began. Play was immediately halted and did not resume.

The semifinals, which also include a match between top-seeded Francesca Schiavone and Timea Bacsinszky, will be played prior to Sunday's final.

Schiavone breezes into Prague semis

Prague, Czech Republic July 17: Francesca Schiavone breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kateryna Bondarenko Friday, putting her in the semifinals of the Prague Open.

The top-seeded Schiavone will meet qualifier Timea Bacsinszky in the semifinals after Bacsinszky surprised fourth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro 6-4, 6-4.

No. 2 seed Sybille Bammer survived in one of the best matches of the tournament, downing Lucie Hradecka 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.

Iveta Benesova ousted Zarina Divas 6-4, 6-1 to earn a semifinal match against Bammer.

Schiavone, Bammer advance in Prague

Prague, Czech Republic July 15: Francesca Schiavone and Sybille Bammer, the top two seeds in the Prague Open, earned quarterfinal berths Wednesday.

Schiavone, seeded No. 1, cruised past Polona Hercog 6-2, 6-2. Bammer was a 6-1, 6-1 victor over Alla Kudryavtseva.

Also advancing were Carla Suarez Navarro, who posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, and Lucie Hrdecka, who fought off Karolina Sprem 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Hradecka will meet Bammer in the quarterfinals Friday.

Third-seeded Iveta Benesova will play her second-round match Thursday.

Schiavone, Bammer advance in Prague Open

Prague, Czech Republic. -- Top seeds Francesca Schiavone of Italy and Sybille Bammer of Austria were first-round winners Monday at the Prague Open.

Schiavone defeated Israeli Shahar Peer 7-5, 6-3 and Bammer beat Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5.

Also, No. 4 Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro defeated Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova beat Slovakian Kristina Kucova 7-5, 6-4.

Russian Vera Zvonareva defeated Belarusian Victoria Azarenka in last year's Prague finale but neither woman is playing in the tournament this year.
