Wozniacki wins, Kuznetsova bounced in N.Y.

New York -- Caroline Wozniacki defeated Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova made an unexpected exit from the U.S. Open in fourth-round action Monday.

The top-seeded Wozniacki, last year's U.S. Open runner-up to Kim Clijsters, pounced on 36 unforced errors from former champ Sharapova en route to a surprisingly easy 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Sharapova had entered the match 2-0 lifetime against the 20-year-old Dane.

Kuznetsova, meanwhile, was bounced by Slovak Dominika Cibulkova in another fourth-round match-up.

Kuznetsova toughs out Carlsbad win

Carlsbad, Calif. -- Unseeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia toughed out a three-set victory over Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska Sunday to claim the Mercury Insurance Open title.

Kuznetsova notched her 13th career singles championship in a hard fought 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3 win over the fourth-seeded Radwanska, marking the first time she has advanced beyond the quarterfinals of any event this year.

Radwanska sent the match into a third set after taking an exciting tie-breaker, then broke serve for a 2-1 lead in the final set. But Kuznetsova won the next four games en route to the victory.

Kuznetsova, Radwanska in Mercury final

Carlsbad, Calif. -- Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia and Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland will square off Sunday for the Mercury Insurance Open championship.

The winner will earn $107,000.

Kuznetsova gained the final with a 6-4, 6-0 semifinal victory Saturday over fifth-seeded Flavia Pennetta, who was making a bid to join Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova as the only players to reach four finals this season.

Radwanska, seeded fourth, defeated Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 6-2 in the other semifinal.

Kuznetsova and Radwanska also met in the 2009 China Open final, with Kuznetsova winning her 12th career title in straight sets.

Radwanska has four career victories.

Serena, Venus advance; Kuznetsova ousted

Paris -- Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova dropped a three-set, third-round French Open match Friday to Maria Kirilenko.

Kirilenko, the No. 30 seed, got a crucial break of serve in the third set in defeating the sixth-seeded Kuznetsova 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Kuznetsova had 36 winners but also 37 unforced errors.

Earlier, top-seeded sisters Serena and Venus Williams each advanced out of the second round with straight-set wins.

Serena Williams, the world No. 1-ranked woman player, routed Julia Georges 6-1, 6-1 in 55 minutes. Williams committed just four unforced errors -- Georges had 20 -- and faced just one break-point situation.

Kuznetsova slump continues in Rome

Rome -- Fifth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova was beaten Monday in a second-round match at the $2 million Italian Open in Rome.

Kuznetsova fell 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to Maria Kirilenko in the only second-round match Monday of the clay-court tournament. Kuznetsova blasted 10 aces but also had nine double faults and was kept on the defensive much of the match; Kirilenko forced Kuznetsova into 21 break-point situations, winning seven.

Kuznetsova, No. 5 in the world, has lost three of her last four matches.

No. 16-seeded Shahar Peer was among four players who won first-round matches as she took out Corinna Dentoni 6-2, 6-1 in 67 minutes.

Second-round upsets mark German tournament

Stuttgart, Germany -- Seeded players Svetlana Kuznetsova and Agnieszka Radwanska both lost second-round matches Tuesday at the $700,000 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Germany.

Kuznetsova, the tournament's No. 3 seed, was beaten 6-3, 7-5 by Na Li. Na was good on 83 percent of her first serves and cashed in 70 percent of the points when she got the first serve in.

The fifth-seeded Radwanska was ousted by Shahar Peer 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, losing her service games seven times in 14 chances.

The rest of the schedule Wednesday included the completion of the first round with No. 4-seeded Jelena Jankovic's 6-2, 6-2 win over Gisela Dulko in one of the most solid performances of the day.

Kuznetsova takes Stuttgart first-rounder

Stuttgart, Germany -- Svetlana Kuznetsova opened defense of her Porsche Tennis Grand Prix title with a straight-set win Tuesday at the tournament in Germany.

Kuznetsova, seeded third, rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Katarina Srebotnik in a first-round match. Kuznetsova saved all three of the break-point situations she faced and won an impressive 71 percent of the points on her serve.

No. 5-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska was the only other seeded player on Tuesday's schedule. She advanced with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win over Ana Ivanovic in a tight match.

Na Li posted the most lop-sided score of the day with her 6-1, 6-1 romp over Sara Errani. The match took just 55 minutes and Na matched Kuznetsova by winning 71 percent of the points on serve.

Kuznetsova, Venus reach third round

Key Biscayne, Fla. -- Top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova and No. 3 Venus Williams survived their opening tests Thursday at the Sony Ericsson Open.

All 32 seeded players in the tournament received a bye past the first round and Williams opened her bid for a fourth title by defeating Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-3. Kuznetsova, the reigning French Open champion, was a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 winner over Peng Shuai.

Of the 16 seeds in action Thursday, six were eliminated.

The highest-seeded player to fall was No. 8 Li Na, who lost to Timea Bacsinszky 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3). No. 10 Flavia Pennetta lost to Andrea Petkovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.
In the third round, Kuznetsova will face 27th-seeded Agnes Szavay and Williams will play unseeded Roberta Vinci.

Russia heads for Fed Cup duel with U.S.

Belgrade, Serbia -- A doubles win by Svetlana Kuznetsova and Alisa Kleybanova Sunday carried Russia into the Fed Cup semifinals, where its opponent will be the United States team.

Kuznetsova and Kleybanova knocked off Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic 6-1. 6-4 and the Russians had a 3-2 quarterfinal victory over Serbia.

Kleybanova had earlier tied the best-of-five series 2-2 with a singles win over Ivanovic.

The United States team advanced to the semis against the Russians with a 4-1 win over France.

Russia, Serbia 1-1 at Fed Cup tennis

Belgrade, Serbia -- Jelena Jankovic's 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over Alisa Kleybanova Saturday pulled Serbia into a 1-1 tie with Russia at the Fed Cup quarterfinal in Belgrade.

Svetlana Kuznetsova had given Russia a 1-0 advantage with a 6-1, 6-4 rout of Ana Ivanovic, but Jankovic bounced back after losing the first set against Kleybanova.

Sunday's doubles match pits the duo of Ivanovic-Jankovic against Vera Dushevina-Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and if needed, Jankovic battles Kuznetsova, while Ivanovic battles Kleybanova.

The winner plays either France of the United States in the semifinals.

Russia has won the event four times since 2004, and is 2-0 all-time against the Serbs in Fed Cup play.

Kuznetsova to open for Russia in Fed Cup

Belgrade -- World No. 4 Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova will face former top-ranked Serbian Ana Ivanovic in the first match Saturday of a Fed Cup quarterfinal in Serbia.

Kuznetsova, who won last year's French Open, and Ivanovic, No. 23 as of Monday, open the best-of-five series on an indoor hard court in Belgrade. The winning team has a Fed Cup semifinal appointment against either France or the United States in April.

The second singles match sends Russian Alisa Kleybanova, ranked 31st, against Serbian Jelena Jankovic, another former No. 1 who is currently ranked eighth in the world.

Sunday's reverse singles would feature a Top 10 matchup of Kuznetsova meeting Jankovic while Ivanovic goes against Kleybanova.
