Student gets report card from wrong school

New York -- A New York teenager said he was surprised to receive a report card this month from a school he stopped attending at the end of the last school year.

Quinn Montgomery, 15, said he transferred from Eximius College Preparatory Academy to Intermediate School 117 during the summer, but he received a report card this month for four classes he never attended, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

The eighth-grader said the report card showed failing grades in Spanish, English and environmental science with a C- in global history.

"Eximius is a mess. You walk inside and kids are throwing paper at each other and cursing out teachers," Quinn said of the public school. "It makes sense they don't know that I'm not a student there."

After dinosaurs, mammals went supersized

Albuquerque -- When dinosaurs disappeared, the world's mammal species went on a growth binge and then hit an upper limit, all at about the same time, U.S. researchers say.

Scientists at the University of New Mexico making a survey of big-mammal body size found mammal groups around the world tended to give rise to giant species at about the same time, ScienceNews.org reported Thursday.

Such supersizing took about 20 million years after the disappearance of the dinosaurs, paleoecologist Felisa A. Smith says.

The few mammal species that survived the catastrophe that wiped out dinosaurs started small, "about the size of a baseball, certainly not as big as a football," Smith says.

Clown robber in bathroom was no joke

Akron, Ohio -- An Ohio woman was surprised by a knife-wielding robber in a clown mask while sitting on her toilet, police said.

Cory Buckley, 20, allegedly broke into the Akron home of Jacqueline Cutright, 70, through a basement window Saturday, police told WCMH-TV in Columbus.

Cutright said the clown robber stole her car and escaped with $28 and about $1,000 worth of costume jewelry.

He demanded to know where she kept her drugs and money.

"I said, 'Boy, did you break into the wrong house," Cutright said.
Cutright feared the robber was going to take a silver bracelet a friend gave her.

Costumed students draw attention in Calif.

San Clemente, Calif. -- A group of California teenagers surprised and entertained downtown San Clemente passersby with costumed antics.

The teenagers, who ran through the downtown and pier areas Sunday night in creature costumes, occasionally paused to sit, lie down in contorted positions, or hug light poles, The Orange County (Calif.) Register reported Monday. The youths only identified themselves once the stunt was over.

The seven teens, mostly freshmen and sophomores from San Juan Hills High School in San Juan Capistrano, said they were frequently asked whether they were aliens.

Buffalo found in swimming pool

Cleveland, Ga. -- A Georgia man said he and his wife investigated a pair of large holes in their swimming pool cover and were surprised to find a buffalo in the empty pool.

Chris Nonnemaker of White County said rescuers threw carpet into the pool Saturday morning to help the animal with traction and it was lassoed and removed, WSB-TV, Atlanta, reported Monday.

The White County Sheriff's Office said the buffalo was one of three escapees from a neighbor's farm a few weeks ago. The other two buffalo were previously recaptured.

The owners of the buffalo in the pool said they euthanized the animal.

Bank of Korea keeps lending rate unchanged

Seoul -- The Bank of Korea said Thursday it would keep its seven-day repurchase rate unchanged at 2.25 percent, a move that surprised some bank observers.

Two months ago, the BOK raised its rate 0.25 percentage points. A month ago, policymakers elected to maintain the 2.25 percent rate, as they did Thursday. Bank Gov. Kim Choong-soo said at a news conference after the announcement in Seoul, "There is no change in the view about the need to normalize the policy stance," the Yonhap News Agency reported.

"The process of reaching the key rate's neutral level is not likely to be fast," he said, an indication that policymakers expect the rate to rise, but at a slower pace than expected.
