Sprouting pea found in man's windpipe

Brewster, Mass. -- A Massachusetts man said doctors who initially believed him to be suffering from a tumor instead found a pea sprouting in his windpipe.

Ron Sveden, 75, of Brewster, said Cape Cod Hospital doctors used an X-ray to find a spot on his windpipe that they initially believed to be a cancerous tumor, the Boston Herald reported Thursday.

"My blood pressure was very low. My oxygen count was very low. I was dehydrated, my left lung collapsed, and I had pneumonia," Sveden said.

"Prior to Memorial Day I was going downhill," Sveden said. "My appetite went away and I was coughing a lot. I just had this listless feeling where I just wanted to lie down. I had no ambition to do anything."

Cyclist Kirchen in coma after heart attack

Liestal, Switzerland -- Cyclist Kim Kirchen of Luxembourg was in a medically induced coma Saturday, hours after suffering a heart attack while riding in the Tour of Switzerland.

Kirchen was stricken Friday night, hospitalized at Zurich University Clinic and put into a coma, where he will remain for 24 hours while being evaluated, Team Katusha said in a statement.

An infarction and thrombosis have been ruled out in preliminary tests, the statement said.

Kirchen was a 57th-place finisher in last year's Tour de France, falling from eighth-place in 2008 and seventh in 2007.
