Naples, Fla. -- Defending champions Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly teamed to shoot a 9-under 63 Friday that gave them the lead after one round of the Shark Shootout.

Dustin Johnson and Ian Poulter, opponents in this year's Ryder Cup, made up a partnership that also had a share of the lead in the three-day event hosted by Greg Norman.

The teams of Mark Calcavecchia-Jeff Overton and Fred Funk-Kenny Perry were tied for third place at 64 while Justin Leonard and Scott Verplank were alone in fifth place with a 66.

Stricker repeats as John Deere champion

Silvis, Ill. -- Steve Stricker earned his second straight John Deere Classic victory Sunday, firing a 1-under 70 to best Paul Goydos by two shots.

Stricker's ninth career PGA Tour championship came after he set the PGA Tour 54-hole scoring record Saturday. He cooled off considerably Sunday, carding his worst round of the week, but still managed to hang on for the win at 26-under 258.

It was Stricker's second victory of the season. He also took the Northern Trust Open in February.

Stricker sets 54-hole scoring record

Silvis, Ill. -- Steve Stricker produced the lowest 54-hole score in the history of the PGA Tour Saturday and built a six-shot lead at the John Deere Classic.

Stricker, ranked fourth in the world and the defending champion at this event, shot a 9-under 62 at the TPC-Deere Run course for a three-day total of 25-under 188.

That broke the tour's 54-hole record of 189 set in 1996 by John Cook at the St. Jude Classic and equaled by Mark Calcavecchia in 2001 at the Phoenix Open and Tommy Armour III in 2003 at the Texas Open.

Stricker needs to shoot a 65 on Sunday to break the tour's 72-hole scoring mark established by Armour in 2003.

Stricker passes Goydos for John Deere lead

Silvis, Ill. -- Steve Stricker vaulted past Paul Goydos Friday to seize a one-shot lead midway through the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill.

Goydos, who Thursday became the fourth player to fire a 59 in a PGA Tour event, birdied five of his first 11 holes Friday but then suffered two late bogeys and settled for a 68 and a 36-hole total of 15-under 127.

Stricker began the day a shot behind Goydos and overtook him with a 66 that left him at 126. Jeff Maggert (65), Matt Jones (67) and George McNeill (65) shared third place at 131.

Stricker No. 2 in world golf rankings

Virginia Water -- Steve Stricker's victory at the PGA's Northern Trust Open in California boosted him to the world No. 2 ranking.

He improved his world ranking to No. 2, matching his career best. He was second in the rankings for three weeks last September.

Johnson aced the par-3 fourth and was also at 10-under with two holes to play when the action was suspended because of darkness.

Rain fell off and on all day and a blustery wind added to the difficult playing conditions.

Norton, Mass. Sept. 4: Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk shot 8-under 63s Friday to highlight a burst of low scoring and share the lead after one round of the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Tiger Woods, meanwhile, found himself seven shots off the pace.

In the second of the PGA Tour's four playoff tournaments, Stricker put himself in excellent position to take the lead in the race for the FedEx Cup.

Furyk is trying for his first victory since 2007. Never in his career has he gone two straight seasons without a win.
