St. Louis -- Chris Carpenter limited Los Angeles to a run in an eight-inning effort Thursday, carrying St. Louis to a 7-1 victory over the Dodgers.

The Cardinals moved within a half game of division-leading Cincinnati thanks to a comeback performance from Carpenter (10-3).

In his previous two outings, Carpenter had allowed a total of 11 earned runs on 18 hits in suffering a pair of losses.

He gave up only four hits to the Dodgers, one of them a fourth-inning homer by Andre Ethier. Carpenter is 6-0 in eight lifetime starts against Los Angeles.

Wainwright (13-5), a member of the National League All-Star team, gave up six hits and struck out four to record his ninth victory in 10 career decisions against the Astros.

Kyle McClellan preserved the shutout with a perfect ninth in a non-save situation.
Pujols doubled in a run in the first and hit a two-run homer in the ninth. It was his 21st home run of the season.

Chris Mason stopped Frans Nielsen and Matt Moulson to secure the victory for St. Louis, which won for the sixth time in seven games. The only loss in that stretch came last Saturday at Colorado.

Mason made 29 saves, allowing only a power-play goal to Moulson with 10 seconds to play in the first period.

MLB: Cincinnati 4, Chicago Cubs 0

Cincinnati, Aug. 5: Justin Lehr threw a four-hit shutout in only his second career start Wednesday, giving the Cincinnati Reds a 4-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

The unexpected sparkling performance allowed the Reds to snap an eight-game losing streak.

Lehr (1-0) spent three years in the bullpens of Milwaukee and Oakland beginning in 2004, but had not seen any major league action since 2006 until the Reds inserted him into their rotation last week.

He was not involved in a decision Friday against Colorado, but dominated the Cubs while striking out four and walking one.

Lehr did not give up a hit until the fourth and outdueled Chicago's Rick Harden, who was going after his third straight win.

MLB: St. Louis 10, Kansas City 5

Kansas City, Mo. June 19: Ryan Ludwick highlighted a six-run third inning with a grand slam homer Friday, igniting the St. Louis Cardinals to a 10-5 inter-league win over Kansas City.

Colby Rasmus had four of the 14 St. Louis hits, scored twice and also had two RBI. The Cardinals won for the third time in four games.

It was a 1-1 tie going into the third, but Kyle Davies (3-7) gave up two singles and an intentional walk to load the bases before Ludwick hit his homer to left. Both Rick Ankiel and Khalil Greene hit solo home runs later in the inning.

Greene was making his first start at third base since coming off the disabled list. He had been put on the DL suffering from a social anxiety disorder.

MLB: San Francisco 4, St. Louis 2

San Francisco -- Matt Cain gave up two runs in 6 1/3 innings Friday and won his fourth straight decision, helping bring the San Francisco Giants a 4-2 victory over St. Louis.

The Cardinals lost for the first time in three games and fell back into a tie with Milwaukee atop the National League Central.

Cain (6-1) struck out five and allowed six hits before leaving with one on and one out in the seventh.

St. Louis did not manage a single base runner against three relievers, with Brian Wilson working the ninth for his 11th save.

Pablo Sandoval drove in the first two San Francisco runs with a first-inning single and the Giants scored twice more in the fourth when Fred Lewis tripled in a run. Lewis then came in on a single by Emmanuel Burriss.
