Betty White to play Mrs. Claus in special

Los Angeles -- U.S. actress Betty White is lending her voice to the character of Mrs. Claus in a new animated Christmas special, ABC said Tuesday.

The 7-minute short, "Prep & Landing: Operation Secret Santa," is to premiere Dec. 7 during the holiday classic "A Charlie Brown Christmas."

The second installment in the "Prep & Landing" series once again follows the comic adventures of Santa's stealthiest elves, Lanny and Wayne.

Florida hunter shoots friend with arrow

Middleburg, Fla. -- A Florida deer hunter was seriously hurt when his fellow hunter shot him through the arm with an arrow, the sheriff said.

On Wednesday, Randy Pritchard, 40, shot an arrow from his tree stand into palmetto bushes 10 yards away in Jennings State Forest. He hit his friend John Whigham, 36, thinking he was a deer, Clay County Today reported, quoting the sheriff's office.

Pritchard called for help and was "holding pressure to the wounds and extremely emotional" when a sheriff's deputy arrived.

Pritchard told the deputy it was an accident, and that Whigham was able to remove the arrow from his left forearm after he emerged from the bushes. Whigham also had a puncture wound in his lower back.

Hur grabs 1-shot LPGA Classic lead

Galloway, N.J. -- M.J. Hur carded a 7-under-par 64 Saturday, coming close to a course record in posting a one-shot lead after three rounds of the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

Hur's total of 11-under-par 131 was one stroke shy of the 36-hole tournament record and good for one-shot advantage over Paula Creamer, who notched a 6-under 65 on the Bay Course at Dolce Seaview Resort & Spa in Galloway, N.J.

Hur, 20, advanced to the top of the leaderboard with a birdie on the par-three 15th and ended her day with a birdie on the final hole to register the first 36-hole lead of her LPGA Tour career.

Creamer, meanwhile, holed a long birdie putt on the 18th after five straight pars to claim sole possession of second place in her first start since April thumb surgery.

Woman accidentally shot in butt at store

Chino Hills Calif. -- A gun brought to a Bass Pro Shops store in California for use on the shooting range accidentally discharged, shooting a woman in the buttocks, authorities said.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office said a 52-year-old man, who was not identified, brought six guns to the store Sunday to test fire at the upstairs shooting range and a .45-caliber handgun accidentally discharged while he was checking the guns in at the store's front desk, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Ontario, Calif., reported Tuesday.

"(The bullet) exited through the bag, traveled about 40 yards away and hit a female shopper in the left side of her bottom," sheriff's spokeswoman Tracy Dorsey said.

The guns were seized but no charges have been filed.

Student shot during gun safety class

Orlando, Fla. -- A gun safety class attendee in Orlando, Fla., was accidentally shot in the foot by his instructor, police reported.

Robert Frauman Jr., 50, was one of three students at a concealed weapons certification class at Summit Church Saturday, when he was struck by the stray bullet, a church spokeswoman told the Orlando Sentinel, adding he was "doing well" and the bullet did not hit any bones.

Instructor Michael Phillips could not be reached for comment, the Sentinel said, but another National Rifle Association instructor told the newspaper it is forbidden to take ammunition to classes.

Hunter shot by his own dog

Los Banos, Calif. -- Authorities in California said a hunter was shot by his dog when he left his gun unattended while retrieving duck decoys.

The Merced County Sheriff's Department said the 53-year-old hunter, whose name was not released, was hunting near Los Banos with his Labrador retriever and a partner Saturday when he set down his shotgun and walked about 15 feet away to retrieve some decoy ducks, The Fresno (Calif.) Bee reported Monday.

The dog stepped on the gun, shooting her owner in the upper left part of his back with No. 2 shot.

The sheriff's office said the man was treated and released from Los Banos Memorial Hospital.

Man shoots self during quick-draw practice

Cape Coral, Fla. -- A Florida man with a bullet wound in his leg told sheriff's deputies he accidentally shot himself while practicing his quick-draw.

Lazaro Flores, 50, of Cape Coral, told Lee County sheriff's deputies he was practicing with his .32 caliber 1871 revolver in his girlfriend's backyard in Alva Sunday when he accidentally pulled the trigger while holstering the gun, the Fort Myers (Fla.) News-Press reported Tuesday.

Flores was treated for a bullet wound to his lower right leg at Gulf Coast Hospital.
