New Haven-- Sergiy Stakhovsky notched his fourth career ATP Tour title Saturday, downing Denis Istomin in the Pilot Pen Tennis event in New Haven, Conn.
The ninth-seeded Stakhovsky bounced back after dropping the first set, prevailing in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 decision over the 15th-seeded Istomin.
After the Uzbek charged out of the gate to post a convincing first-set win, Stakhovsky turned it on and wasn't seriously challenged again.
In the final set, Istomin lost his third service game and Stakhovsky held at love on his next two serves. Then, at 40-30 leading 5-4, he hit an overhead winner to take the championship.
Stakhovsky won his second crown of the year after a victory in Den Bosch. He has never lost a final.

New Haven, Conn. -- Sergiy Stakhovsky didn't face a break point in claiming a straight-set win Friday in semifinal play at the $750,000 Pilot Pen tennis tournament in Connecticut.
Stakhovsky, the No. 9 seed who was coming off a Thursday upset of top-seeded Marcos Baghdatis, blew past 12th-seeded Thiemo de Bakker 6-3, 6-4 by winning 58 percent of the points.
He'll be looking for his second title of the year Saturday. No. 10-seeded Viktor Troicki and No. 15-seeded Denis Istomin played in a late Friday semifinal for the right to take on Stakhovsky in the finals.

New Haven, Conn. -- Sergiy Stakhovsky won two matches Thursday, one of them over top-seeded Marcos Baghdatis, to reach the semifinals of the Pilot Pen.
Stakhovsky, at No. 9, is the highest seeded player to get to the semifinals of this last tournament prior to the U.S. Open.
Stakhovsky had to complete his third-round match early Thursday and he did so by defeating Tommy Robredo 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. He then bumped off Baghdatis 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
His semifinal opponent will be Thiemo De Bakker, who coasted by Evgeny Korolev 6-4, 6-3.

Umag, Croatia -- Seeded players Philipp Petzschner of Germany and Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine were ousted Tuesday in the first round of the Croatia Open.
Playing on the clay courts at ITC Stella Maris in Umag, Belgian Olivier Rochus upset Petzschner, seeded fifth, 6-2, 6-3. Italian Potito Starace eliminated Stakhovsky, seeded seventh, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-0.
In other opening-round action, Andreas Seppi of Italy defeated Argentine Maximo Gonzalez 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 and qualifier Simone Bolelli of Italy beat Croatian wild card Antonio Veic 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Other winners were Croatian wild card Ivan Dodig, Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas, Czech Jan Hajek and Frenchman Stephane Robert.

Stakhovsky won 2-6, 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (9-7).
It was Stakhovsky's second ATP title. He also won an event last year in Croatia.

St. Petersburg, Russia -- Jeremy Chardy, who at No. 4 was the highest seed in action Tuesday, stormed past Petru-Alexandru Luncanu 6-2, 6-2 at the St. Petersburg Open.
Chardy has reached the semifinals on the ATP circuit four times this year and won the Mercedes Cup, but he had lost in the opening round of his previous four tournaments.
No. 5 seed Igor Andreev also advanced Tuesday with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Potito Starace.
Qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky pulled off the biggest surprise of the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win over sixth-seeded Evgeny Korolev.
Two-time defending champion Andy Murray chose not to compete here this week. No. 1 seed Mikhail Youzhny, coming off a tournament victory in Moscow last weekend, will meet Andrey Golubev Wednesday.

Newport, R.I. July 9: Two-time defending champion Fabrice Santoro finally advanced past the first round Thursday at the rain-marred Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.
Santoro defeated Flavio Cipolla 6-3, 7-5 in a match that was suspended during the first set Wednesday.
The first round was completed Thursday, following rain delays both Tuesday and Wednesday.
Seventh-seeded Kevin Kim reached the second round when Sebastien Grosjean retired with a shoulder injury.
Samuel Groth moved on with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Ricardo Mello; eighth-seeded Sergiy Stakhovsky ousted Frank Dancevic 7-6 (11-9), 2-6, 7-5; Olivier Rochus defeated Alexander Peya 6-2, 4-6, 6-4; and Rajeev Ram was a 6-4, 7-5 victor over Alejandro Falla.
