Semyon Varlamov

NHL: Washington 4, St. Louis 1

St. Louis -- Semyon Varlamov allowed a lone goal late in the second period Wednesday and the Washington Capitals ended a drought in St. Louis with a 4-1 win over the Blues.

The Capitals had lost eight straight games in St. Louis, last winning on the Blues' home ice 14 years ago.

Nicklas Backstrom had two goals and an assist and Varlamov made 37 saves. Washington, owner of the NHL's best record, won its fourth straight.

The only goal Varlamov allowed came from Alexander Steen with 32 seconds left in the middle period.

That cut the St. Louis deficit to 2-1 but Backstrom scored twice in the third to run his total for the season to 11 goals. The second one went into an empty net with 35 seconds to play.

NHL: Washington 3, Carolina 2

Raleigh, N.C. -- Brooks Laich's power-play goal snapped a tie with 7:53 remaining Wednesday, giving Washington a 3-2 win over Carolina.

Washington let a two-goal lead get away, but came up with the key goal from Laich to snap a three-game losing streak. Laich scored just 5 seconds after Jeff Skinner was sent to the box for slashing.

Nicklas Backstrom scored in each of the first two periods for the Capitals, but Sergei Samsonov and Eric Stall produced goals 4 minutes apart early in the third to tie it.

Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves to get the win. The Capitals had allowed 14 goals in their three straight losses.

Justin Peters stopped 35 shots for the Hurricanes, who have lost three in a row and five out of six.

NHL: Washington 4, Atlanta 3

Atlanta -- Alex Ovechkin scored two first-period goals Thursday and the Washington Capitals fought off a late comeback to down Atlanta 4-3.

It was Washington's sixth straight victory and kept the Capitals seven points in front in the Northeast Division.

Ovechkin, who has scored twice in four of the last six games, raised his season goal total to 13. After leading the league in goals each of the last two seasons, Ovechkin began the night on top of the list again.

Washington took a 3-0 lead into the third period, but Atlanta closed within one on scores by Zach Bogosian and Todd White -- the second of those coming with 2:23 to play.

NHL: Washington 4, San Jose 1

Washington, Oct. 15: Alex Ovechkin scored twice in the span of 28 seconds of the second period Thursday, boosting Washington to a 4-1 win over San Jose.

The Capitals ended a four-game losing streak that came on the heels of two consecutive victories to open the season.

The win was tempered by the loss of goaltender Jose Theodore to an undisclosed injury. Theodore played the first period, giving up one goal on 13 shots, but was not on the ice at the start of the second. Semyon Varlamov replaced Theodore and stopped all 15 shots over the remainder of the contest.

Washington defeated San Jose for the first time in 12 tries, a stretch of games played over 10 years.
