At The Motley Fool, we poke plenty of fun at Wall Street analysts and their endless cycle of upgrades, downgrades, and "initiating coverage at neutral." So you might think we'd be the last people to give virtual ink to such "news." And we would be -- if that were all we were doing.

Geneva, Switzerland -- The Large Hadron Collider has produced a pair of Z bosons, a step in the search for the Higgs boson, the so-called God particle, European scientists say.
The achievement is based on data released by the Compact Muon Solenoid collaboration, designed to detect a wide range of particles and phenomena produced in the LHC's high-energy proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions, RIA Novosti reported.
"Seeing this first pair is an important step in the giant collider's hunt for the Higgs boson because the generation and analysis of many more such events could provide one of the key signatures of the elusive Higgs," physicsworld.com said.

Mountain View, Calif. -- Finding life on Mars should be the top priority for any future robotic probes or rovers sent to the planet, some U.S. scientists argue.
The first and only attempts to search for life on Mars were the Viking missions launched in 1975, and when they failed to find evidence it was generally assumed that cold, radiation, the lack of water and other environmental factors ruled out the chances for microbial activity on or near the surface of Mars, SPACE.com reported.

Bologna, Italy -- Italian police said they are searching for a reported lion, which they said may be a puma, in the hills near Bologna.
Police said a truck driver reported spotting a "young lion" Thursday morning and the animal "may in fact be a puma that was reported further north, near Ferrara, a week ago," ANSA reported Thursday.
Investigators said a nearby circus isn't missing any animals and the big cat may have been an exotic pet set free once it became too large to keep.
The search for the big cat comes after police and wildlife authorities searched near Florence for a reported tiger. The animal was never found.

Ann Arbor, Mich. -- A new technique has identified a gene responsible for an inherited kidney disorder and may speed the search for cures of other diseases, U.S. scientists say.disorder
Researchers at the University of Michigan described their success with exome capture, a groundbreaking genetic analysis technique, in the journal Nature Genetics.
The success offers hope that scientists can speed the painstaking search for the genes responsible for many rare diseases and test drugs to treat them, a UM release said Thursday.
Friedhelm Hildebrandt and colleagues combined exome capture with a method of ultra-fast data analysis to identify a new gene involved in a family of congenital cystic kidney diseases.
