Anaheim, Calif., Oct. 20: CC Sabathia won his third game of the playoffs Tuesday and the New York Yankees moved within reach of the World Series by mauling the Los Angeles Angels 10-1.

Pitching on three days rest, Sabathia allowed five hits and struck out five in helping the Yankees take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series. A win Thursday in Game 5, which will be hosted by Los Angeles, will put the Yankees in the World Series for the 40th time in franchise history.

Sabathia dueled with Los Angeles starter Scott Kazmir through three scoreless innings. The Yankees then attacked five Angels' pitchers with a steady onslaught of offense that included two-run homers by Alex Rodriguez and Johnny Damon.

The Angels, who began the night with a 4 1/2-game lead in the American League West, lost for the ninth time in 14 games. Their usually powerful offense has been shut out twice in the past week.

Hernandez (14-5) allowed all four of the Los Angeles hits and struck out six over eight innings. The Angels managed more than one base runner in an inning just once against Hernandez.

Aardsma came on to work a perfect ninth for his 33rd save.

Rays trade Kazmir to LA Angels

Tampa -- Tampa Bay pitcher Scott Kazmir has been shipped to the Los Angeles Angels for fellow left-hander Alex Torres and two others.

The Rays also got third baseman Matt Sweeney and a player to be named later in the deal made late Friday.

It appears to be a red flag from the Rays on their chances to qualify for this season's American League playoffs.

They won the AL pennant in 2008 for the first time in franchise history.

Kazmir (8-7) is Tampa Bay's all-time leader in wins (55), innings pitched (834), strikeouts (874), starts (14), and quality starts (71), despite being just 25 years old.

The Houston native was selected 15th overall in the 2002 Major League Draft by the New York Mets.

Toronto, Aug. 26: Marco Scutaro scored the winning run on a wild pitch by J.P. Howell with two out in the ninth inning Wednesday, giving Toronto a 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay.

The Blue Jays scored twice in the ninth to pull out a win in a strange game in which three umpires worked behind home plate.

Jerry Crawford started the game at the plate, but was hit in the mask by a foul ball and left after the second inning. Tom Hallion moved from second base to call balls and strikes, but he was hit in the chest by a pitch thrown in the sixth inning by Tampa Bay starter Scott Kazmir.

Hallion slumped to the ground and remained there for several minutes before he was able to walk off the field.

Tampa Bay already had a 2-0 lead going into the fifth, when Zobrist hit a two-run homer and Carlos Pena produced a solo shot, his 32nd of the season. Both long balls came off starter Dustin Nippert (4-2).

MLB: Texas 3, Tampa Bay 1

Arlington, Texas July 3: Hank Blalock hit a two-run homer and Tommy Hunter celebrated his 23rd birthday with his first major league victory Friday in a 3-1 Texas win over Tampa Bay.

Hunter (1-1) made his sixth start in the majors and gave up a run on three hits with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

Three Texas relievers tossed 3 2/3 hitless innings, with Frank Francisco claiming his ninth save.

The Rangers, who had just five hits, won their third straight after losing three in a row.

Blalock put Texas in front with his homer in the fourth off Scott Kazmir (4-5). Marlon Byrd doubled home the other Texas run in the fifth.

Rays put Kazmir, Percival on the DL

St. Petersburg, Fla. -- Tampa Bay has placed pitchers Scott Kazmir (right quadriceps strain) and Troy Percival (right shoulder tendinitis) on its 15-day disabled list.

He has compiled a team-high six saves in 14 relief appearances.

The team's exec vice president, Andrew Friedman, told the Saint Petersburg Times that Percival left for his California home on Friday frustrated over his latest arm problems and sounded like there is at least a possibility he could retire.
