Elderly Britons tap into savings to get by

London -- Up to a third of elderly Britons have taken thousands of dollars from their savings in the past year to cover day-to-day expenses, a report indicates.

The survey by the London-based investment group Schroders, showed those over age 65 who tapped into retirement savings had taken out an average of $7,121 in the past year to cover rising living costs, The Daily Telegraph reported
"The challenging economic environment has seen millions of Britons dipping into their savings to fill their income gap," said Robin Stoakley, Schroders managing director.

"The amount of capital being drawn down suggests that it is not just rainy-day funds that are being drained, but a significant proportion of individuals' long-term savings."

Kids hop plane to Nashville

Jacksonville, Fla. -- Southwest Airlines said no rules were broken when three youngsters, ages 15, 13 and 11, used some savings to fly solo from Florida to Nashville.

Bridget Brown, 15, of Jacksonville, said she has saved about $700 from babysitting proceeds so she asked friend Bobby Nolan III, 13, if there was anywhere he wanted to go via plane, First Coast News reported Friday.

The duo brought Brown's 11-year-old brother along to the airport and the three of them purchased tickets to Nashville at the Southwest counter.

"He said OK and told us how much it would be and then we paid him," Brown said. "Then he put the flight things on our bags and then he said you better run because you might miss your flight.

Saving gets harder in Britain

London -- Britain's state-owned National Savings & Investments said Monday it would cut rates on savings certificates and other products due to high sales.

"This year we have agreed to broadly balance the funds coming into NS&I with the funds leaving us," Chief Executive Officer Jane Platt said in a statement.

"We've seen a significant amount of money invested in these products over recent months and so we've taken the difficult decision to withdraw the savings certificates from general sale and reduce the interest rate paid on our direct saver and income bonds," she said.

The savings bank is set up to offer government-backed certificates with its profits limited in order to encourage savings, The Daily Telegraph reported.
