Overland Park, Kan. -- U.S. telecommunications giant Sprint Nextel said it would restructure its network over the next seven years to save up to $11 billion.
Sprint said it would spend $5 billion on contracts with Samsung, Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson to "bring together multiple spectrum bands, or airwaves, on a single, multimode base station." It would also phase out the iDen network, starting in 2013, that it purchased with its $35 billion acquisition of Nextel in 2005.
Sprint said the system would result in greater flexibility, fewer dropped calls and massive savings.
Heavy Reading consultant Berge Ayvazian called Sprint's initiative "a very bold move."

St. Petersburg, Russia -- Governments of 13 countries where the world's tigers still live, meeting in Russia for a wildlife summit, say they've endorsed a proposal to save the big cats.
Delegates to a summit in St Petersburg, Russia, agreed on plans intended to double the number of tigers by 2022, the BBC reported Wednesday.
The countries say they will focus on protecting tiger habitats, addressing poaching and illegal trade and providing the financial resources for the efforts.
Tiger numbers have dropped in the last 100 years from about 100,000 to less than 3,500 tigers in the wild today, with a 40 percent decline in just the past decade, and some populations could disappear within the next 20 years, conservationists say.

Bridgeview, Ill. -- Goalie Andrew Dykstra made a key save on D.C. United in the 86th minute Saturday, preserving a 0-0 tie for the Chicago Fire.
Dykstra came up big against D.C. midfielder Santino Quaranta, who collected a loose ball in the middle of the area and launched what appeared to be a winner, but Dykstra was able to deflect the ball away.
Dykstra also teamed with center back Wilman Conde to stop a sure goal by striker Danny Allsopp in the 78th minute for Chicago (8-12-9).
The contest marked the last home game for Fire forward Brian McBride, who is retiring this season after a career as one of the greatest strikers in MLS. McBride had several opportunities to score in his home swan song but couldn't connect.

Indianapolis -- Dario Franchitti was able to save just enough fuel down the stretch of a dominating performance Sunday to collect the victory at the Indianapolis 500.
Franchetti led for 155 of the 200 laps, taking his last pit stop on lap 164 and skillfully using just enough of his remaining fuel to end up in the Indy 500 winner's circle.
When pole sitter and defending champion Helios Castroneves was forced to pit with nine laps left, Franchetti surged into the lead for good.
Castroneves ended up finishing ninth.
With Franchetti's win, Target Team owner Chip Ganassi became the first owner to collect wins at both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500 NASCAR races.
