Stosur reaches New Haven quarterfinals

New Haven, Conn. -- Australian Samantha Stosur outlasted Sara Errani in three sets Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals of Pilot Pen Tennis event.

Stosur, seeded second in the final hard-court tuneup for the U.S. Open, prevailed over the 23-year-old Italian 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4). The victory put Stosur in the quarterfinals or better in nine of her last 10 tournaments.

Also Tuesday, sixth-seeded Marion Bartoli barely got through to the second round, edging Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

Bartoli goes on to face Aussie Anastasia Rodionova.

Safina advances at Carlsbad

Carlsbad, Calif. -- Russian Dinara Safina struggled in the second set but ended up a straight-wet winner Monday in the first-round of the Mercury Insurance Open.

Safina – ranked No. 35 in the world after having been No.1 at one point -- eliminated Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).

Alisa Kleybanova of Russian dropped Aravane Rezai of France 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 and Sara Errani of Italy beat Olga Govortsova of Belarus 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.

Errani wins at rain-plagued Aegon Classic

Birmingham, England -- Fifth-seeded Sara Errani was among second-round winners Wednesday at the Aegon Classic tennis tournament in rainy Birmingham, England.

Errani's match was one of eight completed out of a scheduled of 20 matches. The schedule was overloaded because of rain Tuesday, and storms again Wednesday caused additional backlog.

Among matches suspended was No. 2-seeded Maria Sharapova, who didn't get to play at all Tuesday and built a 4-0 lead in the first set over Bethanie Mattek-Sands before play was called.

Errani piled up seven breaks of serve in a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win over Shenay Perry before the rains came.

Errani, Kerber advance at Bogota

Bogota -- Italian Sara Errani and Germany's Angelique Kerber registered first-round wins Monday at the Copa Colsanitas tournament in Bogota.

Errani, the No. 3 seed, had little trouble dispatching Belarusian Anastasiya Yakimova 6-0, 6-4 on the clay courts, while No. 5 Kerber had to hold on to defeat Canadian Sharon Fichman 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

No. 6 Czech Sandra Zahlavova breezed by Russian Alexandra Panova 6-3, 6-2 while eighth-seeded Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja struggled to overcome Ukrainian Olga Savchuk 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-2.

The tourney's top seed, Argentine Gisela Dulko, was the runner-up in last year's event. The 2009 Bogota champion, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain, is not defending her title.

Safina takes third title of 2009

Portoroz, Slovenia. -- Top-seeded Dinara Safina of Russia won the Slovenia Open Sunday, defeating Sara Errani of Italy for her third WTA title of 2009.

Safina battled to a 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 7-5 victory over the fifth-seeded Errani in a match that lasted nearly 3 hours.

The win was Safina's 12th on the tour.

Errani also was the runner-up in a tournament in Palermo, Italy, last week.

Pennetta cruises to Palermo championship

Palermo, Italy -- Italian Flavia Pennetta briskly whipped countrywoman Sara Errani in straight sets Sunday for the championship of the Palermo International in Italy.

Pennetta, the top seed, won 6-1, 6-2 in a match that lasted 71 minutes. She did not drop a set in the entire tournament.

"I'm really happy about the final today," Pennetta said. "I lost to Sara (in the semifinals) last year in a very tough match, so when I was going on the court today I was very focused and knew what I had to do to beat someone like her -- to keep my mistakes down."

Errani, Pennetta reach final in Palermo

Palermo, Italy -- Fifth-seeded defending champion Sara Errani and top-seeded Flavia Pennetta advanced Saturday to an all-Italian final at the Palermo International.

Errani posted a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victory Saturday over German Anna-Lena Groenefeld, who had reached the semifinals after second-seeded Swiss Patty Schnyder withdrew from their quarterfinal match Friday.

Pennetta later beat countrywoman Tathiana Garbin 6-1, 6-1 in a match interrupted by a suspension due to darkness.

The final will be the first all-Italian WTA title match since Bogota in 2007.

Top seed reaches Palermo semis

Palermo, Italy July 17: Top-seeded Flavia Pennetta and defending champion Sara Errani moved into the semifinals of the Palermo International Friday.

Pennetta recorded a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Aravane Rezai, setting up a semifinal meeting with Tathiana Garbin.

Garbin, who won this tournament three years ago, was an easy 6-2, 6-1 winner over Olga Govortsova.

The other semifinal will send Errani against Anna-Lena Groenefeld, who advanced when second-seeded Patty Schnyder retired in the first set. Schnyder was coming off a runner-up finish last week in Budapest.

Errani, who won last year's championship match over Mariya Koryttseva, defeated Yaroslava Shevdova 6-2, 7-5 to reach the semifinals.

Pennetta, Errani 1st round Palermo winners

Palermo, Italy July 14: Two Italians -- top-seeded Flavia Pennetta and reigning champion Sara Errani -- were among Tuesday's winners at the Palermo International.

Pennetta defeated Spanish qualifier Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-2, 6-3 and Errani, seeded fifth, beat Ukrainian Mariya Koryttseva 6-4, 6-4 in a rematch of last year's final.

Last week's Bastad titlist, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain, upset third-seeded Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-2, 6-2 on Day 2 in Palermo.

Also, No. 6 Russian Ekaterina Makarova defeated American Jill Craybas 6-3, 6-1 and German Anna-Lena Groenefeld beat No. 8 Argentine Gisela Dulko 6-4, 6-1.

Pennatta among Ordina first-round winners

S-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands -- Third-seeded Flavia Pennetta claimed a straight-set victory Monday in first-round play at the $220,000 Ordina Open tennis tournament in the Netherlands.

Pennetta defeated Yung-Jan Chan 6-4, 6-2 behind a service game that didn't allow a break and a return game that dominated Chan's second serve. Pennetta won 74 percent of the points off Chan's second serve, which helped her to three service breaks.

No. 6-seeded Daniela Hantuchova also won Monday, beating Roberta Vinci 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 and defending Ordina champion Tamarine Tanasugarn advanced with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.

Local favorite Michaella Krajicek defeated Sara Errani 6-4, 6-2.

Defending champion Ivanovic advances

Paris -- Defending champion Ana Ivanovic of Serbia eliminated Italy's Sara Errani Sunday in the first round of the French Open, winning in straight sets.

Ivanovic fought to a 7-6 (7-3) win in the opening set and finished the match 6-3 in the second.

Last year's French Open title was Ivanovic's only win in a Grand Slam event. She is seeded eighth in this year's open.

Ninth-seeded Victoria Azarenka ousted Roberta Vinca 6-4, 6-2.

Eleventh-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia moved on with a 6-1, 6-2 win over American Lauren Embree.

China's China's Li Na, the 25th seed, defeated Marta Domachowska of Poland 6-4, 6-2 and No. 27 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia topped Ioana Raluca Olaru, 6-3, 6-2.
