Chinese players win upsets in China

Guangzhou, China -- Chinese players Han Xinyun and Zhang Shuai posted second-round upset victories Wednesday at the Guangzhou International tennis tournament in China.

Sania Mirza and Maria Elena Camerin also notched upsets, giving seeded players an 0-4 record Wednesday.

Han, a wild-card entrant, ousted fifth-seeded Chang Kai-China 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 behind eight service breaks. She won 55 percent of the points on Chang's serve and Chang hurt her own chances with nine double faults.

Zhang needed just 63 minutes to dispatch No. 8-seeded Chanelle Scheepers 6-1, 6-0. Scheepers had seven double faults and won only 14 points on serve.

No. 3-seeded Akgul Amanmuradova was also defeated, losing 6-4, 6-3 to Mirza, who dropped serve just once in the win.

Wimbledon: Sania out of women's doubles

London, June 27 -- Sania Mirza's run in Wimbledon women's doubles ended when she and Chia-Jung Chuang of Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) went down 2-6, 3-6 to Russia's Alla Kudryavtseva and Monica Niculescu of Romania in the second round here Saturday.

The 15th-seeded Indo-Taiwanese pair frittered away opportunities and could convert only one of their seven break points. They in return were broken four times in the 87-minute match.

Sania and Chuang dropped their serve twice in the first set while wasting five chances to break their opponents. The two, however, with an early break in the second set showed signs of a fightback, but Kudryavtseva and Niculescu broke back in the fourth game to make it 2-2.

Sania out of Wimbledon singles

London, June 24-- Sania Mirza lost to Sorana Cirstea of Romania 4-6, 4-6 in the second round to bow out of the singles competition of the Wimbledon tennis championships here Wednesday.

London, June 22-- India's Sania Mirza defeated Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 to advance to the singles second round of the Wimbledon tennis championships here Monday.

Sania loses in doubles, Bhupathi advances in Aegon International

Eastbourne, June 16 India's Sania Mirza and Chia-Jung Chuang of Chinese Taipei bowed out of the Aegon International tennis with a first-round defeat against fourth-seeded Australians Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs 5-7, 4-6 here Tuesday.

Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles of Bahamas advanced to the men's doubles second round, defeating Australian Stephen Huss and England's Ross Hutchins 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-3.

Second seed Bhupathi and Knowles will face American Travis Parrott and Slovak Filip Polasek, who got the better of Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili and Dmitry Tursunov 4-6, 6-3, 10-4.

Top seed Leander Paes and Czech Lukas Dlouhy will take on Polish Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the first round.

Sania pulls out of Aegon International singles qualifers

Eastbourne, June 15 India's Sania Mirza has retired from the first round of the singles qualifying event of the $600,000 Aegon International tennis due to a right hip strain.

Sania, playing less than a day after her semifinal loss to Magdalena Rybarikova at the Aegon Classic, pulled out when trailing 4-6, 2-3 against Belarussian Tatiana Poutchek, who was called up as an alternate to play in place of Alexandra Dulgheru who withdrew due to a sprained ankle.

Sania led 2-0 in the second set after losing the first before Poutchek won three games on trot to nose ahead for a 3-2 lead. It was then the Indian decided to concede the match.

Sania loses Birmingham tennis semifinal

Birmingham, June 13 India's Sania Mirza blew a set advantage against Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova to go down 6-3, 0-6, 3-6 in the Aegon Classic tennis semifinal here Saturday.

Sania, who had beaten Rybarikova in their only meeting before, was appearing in only her second semifinal of the year. She had reached the Pattaya Open final in February.

The 22-year-old Hyderabadi, who played two matches Friday, recovered from a break down in the fourth game of the first set and then reeled off four games in a row for a 5-2 lead. She then comfortably served out the set in the ninth game.

The 20-year-old Slovak, however, staged a remarkable comeback in the second set, blanking an erring Sania to make it set-all.

Sania in Birmingham quarter-final

Birmingham, June 12 India's Sania Mirza shocked fifth-seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-2 for a place in the quarter-final of the Aegon Classic tennis here.

The 22-year-old Hyderabadi, who sent the Briton Anne Keothavong packing in the previous round, Thursday doled out yet another impressive performance against the World No. 31 Russian.

The 17-year-old Pavlyuchenkova had staved off a gritty challenge from Elena Baltach of Britain in a tough three-setter earlier in the day to reach the third round.

Sania, who in February reached her second WTA final in two years at the Pattaya Open, now plays Hungary's 16th seed Melinda Czink.

Czink, ranked 62, upset third seed Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada 6-7 (7), 7-5, 7-5.

Sania beats Keothvong, advances to Birmingham pre-quarters

Birmingham, June 10 Sania Mirza overcame a stiff challenge from British number one Anne Keothavong 6-1, 7-6 (5) to advance to the pre-quarterfinals of the Aegon Classic tennis here Wednesday.

The unseeded Indian star, who has fallen to 98th in the world rankings from a career-best 27 two years ago, showed no signs of a career-threateneing wrist injury as she battled past 11th seeded Keothavong in the run-up to Wimbledon that begins June 22.

Sania, 22, raced through the first set breaking Keothavong thrice.

The 25-year-old Briton fought back in the second set and seemed poised to level at 5-2.

But Sania successfully defended nine break points that included two set points to enforce a tie-break, which she held her nerve to win closely.
