Final U.S. men's hope Querrey ousted

New York -- Sam Querrey, the final American in the men's U.S. Open singles, fell to Stanislas Wawrinka Tuesday in a 4 1/2-hour fourth-round match.

The 25th-seeded Wawrinka outlasted Querrey 7-6, 6-7, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, in a back-and-forth epic. The Swiss, who beat No. 4 Andy Murray in the third round, broke Querrey's serve in the final game to move into the quarterfinals.

Querrey's defeat ensured that no Americans would make the U.S. Open men's quarterfinals for the second straight year. That had never happened in the open era prior to 2009.

Women's player Venus Williams remained the only American in singles competition after Querrey's defeat.

With the win, the American player became the first back-to-back champion in Los Angeles since Andre Agassi accomplished the feat in 2001-02.

Querrey earned his sixth career title and improved to 4-1 in title matches.

Tipsarevic went up 5-1 before Querrey answered with six straight points to take the middle set 7-6 (7-5).
