Washington -- Potentially harmful arsenic levels have been found in private water wells in towns across Maine, a U.S. Geological Survey report says.
Arsenic levels in some private wells exceeded the federal safety standard for public drinking water by 10 to100 times or more, even in areas where elevated arsenic risks were previously suspected, findings released Wednesday by the USGS said.
"We found large differences in concentrations from well to well, even at the town level, so residents need to test their wells to know their arsenic level," USGS scientist Martha Nielsen, who led the study in cooperation with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said.

New York -- The Volvo automobile is known for its safety, but it could become known for endurance: A 1966 model is closing in on 3 million miles, the New York owner says.
Retired Long Island schoolteacher Irv Gordon hopes to get another 200,000 miles out of the car he purchased for nearly a year's salary, he told The Detroit News.
Now 70, Gordon said he hopes to hit 3 million miles by the time he's 73.
"Got just over 2.8 million miles," he told the newspaper. "We've slowed down a little -- rather than over 100,000 miles a year, we're averaging about 80,000."
The cherry-red Volvo P1800 has few conveniences people expect today, but it does have 460 air-conditioning, he said: "460 air conditioning -- four windows down, 60 miles an hour."

Yiwu, China -- The Chinese State Food and Drug Administration has drafted a plan to monitor the safety of cosmetics and beauty products, an official said Friday.
The official, who did not want his name used, told Xinhua, the official government news agency, the SFDA presented the plan at a conference in Yiwu. He said the administration plans to set up a safety commission and is considering the qualifications of agencies involved with the industry to regulate the safety of skin-care products and cosmetics.
China has not had any system to ensure the safety of beauty products. That became an issue in 2006 when chromium was found in products made in Japan by a division of the U.S. company Procter & Gamble and distributed in China.

Puget Sound, Wash. -- The gas bill of some Washington residents stinks -- literally -- making the gas company happy, because that's what they say they intended as a safety reminder.
When Puget Sound Energy sent out their August bills to more than 1.5 million homes, they included a scratch-and-sniff pamphlet with a sample of the odorant they use in natural gas to help identify leaks, a company release said.
One scratch on the pamphlet and the resident will get a sulfur-like whiff of something akin to rotten eggs, which is the odorant mercaptan added to the odorless and colorless natural gas.

Meriden, Conn. -- Police in Connecticut said a woman who allegedly ran a prostitution business at her home had $600,000 in profits stored in a safety deposit box.
Meriden police Sgt. Leonard Caponigro said police set up surveillance and obtained a search warrant for the residence of Kim Wroblewski, 54, at Britannia Commons Condominium after neighbors complained about men frequently stopping by for hourlong visits, The Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported Friday.
Caponigro said they found several items believed to have been used in the sex trade in Wroblewski's home and a search warrant for a local bank uncovered $600,000 in the woman's safety deposit box.

Washington, April 25: During a dramatic few moments in the US capital, US President Barack Obama and the US Congress were forced to relocate to safety when a small plane violated the tight airspace regulations around Washington Friday.
The White House went into lockdown, and both Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were "briefly relocated out of an abundance of caution", said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.
On Capitol Hill, the US Senate adjourned into a quick recess but returned to session minutes later after the all-clear.
Gibbs did not refer to the measures as an evacuation, and the violation was so brief that people resumed their activities almost immediately.
MSNBC television reported that the pilot complied with demands to alter course. The all-clear signal was given just minutes later.
