Youzhny, Kukushkin to vie in Russia

St. Petersburg, Russia -- Russian Mikhail Youzhny and Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin will square off for the St. Petersburg Open title after both won semifinals matches Saturday.

No. 1 seed Youzhny played a tense third-set tiebreaker, saving four match points before downing fellow Russian Dmitry Tursunov, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8). Youzhny got hot late in the tiebreaker, storming back from a 6-3 deficit to deny Tursunov.

He eventually prevailed in a match that lasted just over three hours.

In the day's other semifinal, Kukushkin emerged with a 6-3, 6-4 win over the Ukraine's Ilya Marchenko in a relatively easy affair that lasted just 95 minutes. Kukushkin broke serve for a 5-4 lead in the second set to reach his first career WTP finals.

Murray, Youzhny reach Valencia final

Valencia, Spain -- Top-seeded Scotsman Andy Murray and Russian Mikhail Youzhny will battle Sunday for the $3 million Valencia Open championship.

Murray reached the final by knocking off fourth-seeded Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the semifinals. Murray is 7-1 lifetime against the Spaniard.

Youzhny rallied past countryman and No. 2 seed Nikolay Davydenko 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a nearly 2 1/2-hour marathon.

Davydenko was the third seeded player Youzhny upset this week. He also beat No. 3 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and No. 5 Gilles Simon.

This is Youzhny's fourth final this year. He is 5-6 lifetime in title matches.

Murray will be going after his sixth title this year and 14th of his career.

Tomas Berdych wins the BMW Open

Munich, Germany. -- Czech Tomas Berdych won the BMW Open in
Munich Sunday with a three-set victory against Russian Mikhail Youzhny.

The scores were 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).

"All the matches were quite long, but (I won) the tournament," the fourth-seeded Berdych said.

Before Sunday, he topped France's Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 5-7, 6-2; two-time major champion Lleyton Hewitt 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in a match that lasted nearly 2 1/2 hours and German crowd favorite Andreas Beck 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Berdych and Youzhny have met three times this season and Berdych took a 2-1 lead with Sunday's win.

He earned a $95,000 champion's check.

Berdych upset, Gasquet out at Marseilles

Marseille, France -- Russian Mikhail Youzhny upset fifth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych during Monday's first-round tennis action at the Open 13 in Marseille, France.

Youzhny defeated Berdych 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1.

Also Monday, sixth-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet pulled out of the draw with a shoulder injury.

Eighth-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez bounced back from a first-set loss to beat Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.

In other first day play, Czech Jan Hernych defeated Belgian Kristof Vliegen 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 and Dmitry Tursunov beat fellow Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
