MLB: LA Dodgers 7, Washington 6

Washington, Sept. 24: Rafael Furcal hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth Thursday and the Los Angeles Dodgers, despite blowing a four-run lead, downed Washington 7-6.

The Dodgers, who began the night with a five-game lead over Colorado atop the National League West, got an RBI single from Manny Ramirez and a three-run homer from Matt Kemp in the first inning.

They spent the rest of the game trying to fight off the Nationals, who could not avoid losing for the 100th time this season.

Washington forged a 6-6 tie in the sixth on RBI singles by Cristian Guzman and Willie Harris and the score remained deadlocked until Furcal's blast in the eighth.

MLB: Washington 8, Philadelphia 7

Washington, Sept. 10: Ian Desmond had his first major league hit, his first RBI and his first home run Thursday to highlight the Washington Nationals' 8-7 victory over Philadelphia.

Desmond, who has spent six years in the minor leagues, finally was called up to the majors this month and got the start Thursday at shortstop for a team that has lost 92 games.

His heroics helped the Nationals build an 8-2 lead going into the ninth and they survived a five-run Philadelphia outburst to halt a two-game skid.

The Phillies had the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on first with one out in the ninth before Ryan Howard grounded into a double play to end the game.

MLB: Tampa Bay 4, Washington 3

St. Petersburg, Fla. June 13: Gabe Kapler's pinch homer in the eighth inning Friday lifted the Tampa Bay Rays to a 4-3 inter-league win over the Washington Nationals.

Kapler, batting for Gabe Gross, hit his second homer this season to snap a 3-3 tie with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to cap Tampa Bay's comeback from a 3-0 first-inning deficit.

Kapler got lucky after Washington first baseman Nick Johnson dropped his foul pop and he hit the next offering from losing pitcher Ron Villone (3-2) into the left center field seats.

Dioner Navarro led Tampa Bay with two hits and one RBI. Gross had one RBI and five others had one hit for the Rays, who have won three in a row and seven of their last 10 games.

The winner was J.P. Howell (2-2).
