Federer handles Nadal for ATP Finals crown

London -- Roger Federer dominated the first and third sets Sunday, cruising to his fifth career win of the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Federer took a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Rafael Nadal to notch his fifth crown of 2010 and the 66th of his career.

Federer displayed amazing athleticism in the first set, but Nadal came back to take the second. Each broke the other's serve once in the first two sets.

In the third, Federer took a 3-1 lead after taking advantage of a second serve to race to the net and force Nadal to drive a forehand pass wide. The Swiss superstar then held serve and gained two break points in the next game, needing just one to establish a 5-1 lead.

Federer through to ATP semifinals

London -- Roger Federer completed an unbeaten run through round-robin play at the ATP World Tour Finals in London with a straight-set win Thursday over Robin Soderling.

Federer, seeded second, topped the fourth-seeded Soderling 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in taking Group B with a 3-0 record. Soderling, 1-2, in the group, must wait until fifth-seeded Andy Murray (1-1) and seventh-seeded David Ferrer (0-2) play later Thursday to see if he's able to advance out of group play.

Federer had a break in each set, with the first coming in the day's third game. Soderling evened the set with an eighth-game break and set up the tie-breaker. Federer claimed that when Soderling let a ball he could have returned go by, only to have it land well in for a winner.

Federer, Soderling win at WTA Finals

London -- World No. 2 Roger Federer and fourth-seeded Robin Soderling posted round-robin wins Tuesday at the ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Federer defeated No. 5-seeded Andy Murray 6-4, 6-2 and is 2-0 in Group B play while the No. 5-seeded Murray fell to 1-1. Soderling is also 1-1 after a 7-5, 7-5 win over seventh-seeded David Ferrer, who dropped to 0-2.

Federer lost only eight points in nine service games in the win over Murray. He broke Murray's serve at love in the third game of the first set and grabbed the advantage with a break to end a lengthy game at the beginning of the second set.

Nadal, Federer top ATP finals groups

London -- World No. 1 Rafael Nadal will head up Group A while Roger Federer tops Group B for round-robin play at the ATP World Tour Finals next week in London.

Nadal's group will also have third-ranked Novak Djokovic, No. 6 Tomas Berdych and eighth-ranked Andy Roddick. In addition Federer, Group B features fourth-seeded Robin Soderling, No. 5 Andy Murray and seventh-ranked David Ferrer.

Sunday kicks off six days of round-robin play with Soderling going against Murray while Federer will take on Ferrer. Monday opens the Group A schedule with Djokovic and Berdych going in the first match and Nadal and Roddick in the second.

The Top 2 finishers in each group advance to the Nov. 27 semifinals with the championship to be decided Nov. 28.

Federer, Djokovic, Murray win in Paris

Paris -- Top seed Roger Federer, No. 2 Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Andy Murray were second-round winners Wednesday at the BNP Paribas Masters tennis tournament in Paris.

Federer defeated Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-4. Djokovic eliminated Juan Monaco 6-4, 6-3 and Murray defeated David Nalbandian 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 to join Federer and Djokovic in advancing to the third round.

No. 4 seed and French Open finalist Robin Soderling of Sweden also had little trouble Wednesday, dispatching Frenchman Gilles Simon, 6-4, 6-0, using 11 aces to log the win in only 63 minutes.

He will now go on to face Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.

Federer beats Djokovic in Swiss Indoors

Basel, Switzerland -- Roger Federer topped Novak Djokovic in three sets Sunday and won his fourth Swiss Indoors tennis title in five years.

Federer, No. 2 in the world, defeated the third-ranked Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in a rematch of the 2009 Swiss Indoors final. Djokovic won that match, ending Federer's string of Swiss Indoors titles from 2006-08. Federer improved to 12-6 -- including 3-1 this year -- lifetime against Djokovic.

There were two service breaks in the first two sets. Federer won the first set behind a third-game break and Djokovic evened the match by breaking Federer's serve in the second game of the second set.

Federer, Djokovic set up rematch in Basel

Basel, Switzerland -- Local hero Roger Federer will meet U.S. Open runner-up Novak Djokovic for the Swiss Indoors title after both won semifinal matchups Saturday.

The top-seeded Federer delighted the fans in his hometown of Basel, Switzerland, by dispatching American Andy Roddick 6-2, 6-4, while No. 2 seed Djokovic moved on with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 decision over fellow Serb Viktor Troicki.

Federer broke Roddick's serve on two occasions en route to an easy first-set win. Roddick took a 2-0 lead in the second set but Federer rallied, breaking the American twice more to improve to 20-2 lifetime against Roddick.

It's Federer-Roddick in Swiss Indoors semi

Basel, Switzerland -- Top-seeded Roger Federer claimed another quick straight-set victory Friday in quarterfinal play at the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament.

Federer improved to 9-2 lifetime against Radek Stepanek with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Federer won 80 percent of the points on serve and didn't face a break point. He notched a break in sixth game of the first set and won two more -- in the fifth and seventh games -- in the second.

He moves into Saturday's tournament semifinals against fourth-seeded Andy Roddick, who beat David Nalbandian 6-4, 6-4. Roddick only lost nine points on serve and also didn't have to deal with a break point.

Federer back in Swiss Indoors quarterfinal

Switzerland- Roger Federer needed only 61 minutes Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament.

Federer, the world No. 2-ranked player, lost seven points in his 10 service games during a 6-3, 6-4 win over Janko Tipsarevic. Federer has played a total of 113 minutes in winning his first two matches in Basel, his hometown.

Against Tipsarevic, Federer was extremely efficient, finishing off both break-point chances he had and winning 85 percent of the points off his serve.

Federer notches ATP title No. 64

Stockholm -- World No. 2 Roger Federer was a straight-set winner Sunday in the title match of the Stockholm Open in Sweden.

Federer once again needed to rally from a break down but was able to beat Florian Mayer 6-4, 6-3. It was the 64th career ATP career title for Federer, tying him with Pete Sampras for fourth on the all-time championships list.

But it was a relatively rocky path for Federer. In the quarterfinals he trailed Stanislas Wawrinka by a set and a break before coming back and in Saturday's semifinals he was down an early break to Ivan Ljubicic before advancing.

The same script played out Sunday with Mayer taking a 4-3 lead in the first set.

Federer breezes to second-round win

Stockholm, Sweden -- World No. 2 Roger Federer was on the court less than an hour Thursday in collecting a second-round decision at the Stockholm Open tennis tournament in Sweden.

Federer needed just 51 minutes to get by Taylor Dent 6-1, 6-2. Federer claimed four breaks in seven Dent service games and saved both break points he faced.

He moved into a quarterfinal match against fifth-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka.

Second-seeded Robin Soderling didn't face a break point in a 6-3, 6-3 run over Benjamin Becker. Soderling lost eight points in his nine service games.

No. 4-seeded Ivan Ljubicic fired 12 aces en route to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Arnaud Clement. Like Soderling, Ljubicic didn't face a break-point situation.

Federer back to No. 2 in world rankings

London -- Roger Federer lost the final at the Shanghai Masters but managed to move back to No. 2 in the men's tennis world rankings released Monday.

Federer dropped a straight-set decision to Andy Murray in the finals in Shanghai. Murray earlier in the week became the fourth player to lock up a spot in the season-ending ATP World Finals.

With four tournament weeks remaining before the World Finals, which invites the top eight ranked players, jockeying in the Top 10 is important. Even a No. 9 or 10 ranking could win an invitation to London if higher rated players withdraw.

With the Shanghai event the next-to-last on the Masters schedule, all of the top players were in attendance and the Top 10 saw a shake-up as a result.
