Vinci tops Goerges in Luxembourg final

Luxemburg -- Unseeded Roberta Vinci beat No. 8-seeded Julia Goerges in straight sets Sunday in claiming the championship of the Luxembourg Open tennis tournament.

Vinci dropped just one set during the week and Sunday battled through a tough match with Goerges for a 6-3, 6-4 win over an hour and a half
The match promised to be close. Both had played well in getting to the finals and Goerges was ranked 44th and Vinci 45th in the world.

Goerges fired eight aces and forced 13 break-point situations on Vinci. But the Italian player was able to fend off 11 of them while cashing in four of the seven break-point chances she had.

Vinci continues Barcelona run

Barcelona -- Defending champion Roberta Vinci advanced to the semifinals of the $220,000 of the Barcelona Ladies Open with a straight-set win Thursday.

Vinci, who won her second career WTA title a year ago in Barcelona, swept by Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 6-0 in 55 minutes to get to the tournament semifinals. Vinci had five service breaks in the win.

She'll play Alexandra Dulgheru in Friday's semis. Dulgheru battled through nearly 2 1/2 hours in taking a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 decision over Arantxa Parra Santonja.

Top-seeded Francesca Schiavone defeated Carla Suarez Navarro 6-4, 6-4 to earn a semifinal slot. Her opponent will be Yaroslava Shvedova, who beat Iveta Benesova by the same 6-4, 6-4 score.

Vinci takes first-round upset win in Spain

Barcelona-- Defending champion Roberta Vinci upset second-seeded Aravane Rezai in first-round play Tuesday at the $220,000 Barcelona Ladies Open in Spain.

Vinci picked up the second WTA title of her 11-year professional career with a win at Barcelona last year and continued her strong play at the clay-court event by beating Rezai 6-3, 6-4 in 72 minutes.

Vinci took advantage of Rezai's serve problems in winning half the points when Rezai served and collecting five service breaks in making it to the second round.

Serena Williams withdraws from Fed Cup

Doha, Qatar -- Serena Williams has withdrawn from the U.S. Fed Cup tennis final against Italy next week at Reggio Calabria.

Her decision was announced by the United States Tennis Association.

She made the decision late Saturday before her season-ending match against older sister, Venus, at the Sony Ericsson Championships at Doha, Qatar.

"I think I'm just going to be wiped out by the end of this," Serena said after beat the injured Caroline Wozniacki.

Her decision means Vania King, No. 78 in the latest women's world rankings, gets a chance to better her 4-5 career Fed Cup record.

Safina, Venus advance at Cincy tournament

Cincinnati, Aug. 12: Dinara Safina bounced back after losing the first set Tuesday to beat Roberta Vinci at the Western and Southern Financial Group Women's Open in Cincinnati.

The top-ranked Russian, who was runner-up at the French and Australian Opens, beat her Italian opponent 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 in second-round play at the $2 million event.

Safina racked up 10 double faults in the match, which lasted nearly two hours.

Venus Williams of the United States also advanced Tuesday by dispatching Belarusian Olga Govortsova 6-2, 6-2.
French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova struggled against Czech Lucie Safarova but eventually prevailed 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-4).

Safina survives in Cincy

Cincinnati -- Dinara Safina rallied to a second-round win over upstart Italian Roberta Vinci Tuesday in the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open in Cincinnati.

The top-ranked Russian dropped the first set 2-6, scratched out a 7-5 win in the second and then put Vinci away 6-4 in the deciding set on the hard courts at the
Lindner Family Tennis Center. Safina hurt herself with 10 double faults.

Last year's champion, Russian Nadia Petrova, seeded 10th, was eliminated by
Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko 6-2, 6-3 in opening-round play. In another first-round upset, China's Peng Shuai beat 15th-seeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 6-1.

Safina avoids upset bug in Slovenia

Portoroz, Slovenia July 22: Top-seeded Dinara Safina avoided a rash of upsets Wednesday with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ksenia Pervak in the second round of the Slovenia Open.

Three seeded players were ousted Wednesday, one day after No. 2 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues was eliminated.

Maria Elena Camerin earned a quarterfinal meeting with Safina by defeating seventh-seeded Vera Dushevina 4-6, 7-5, 6-0. Safina is playing for the first time since she was defeated in the semifinals at Wimbledon by Venus Williams.

No. 4 seed Roberta Vinci fell Wednesday to Rossana de los Rios and Lucie Safarova, the sixth seed, lost to Stefanie Voegele 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

Pennetta reaches Palermo quarterfinals

Palermo, Italy July 15: Top-seeded Flavia Pennetta made it into the third round of the Palermo International Wednesday with a straight-sets victory over Roberta Vinci.

Pennetta, ranked 15th in the world, overcame a sluggish start on the red clay surface to defeat Vinci 7-5, 6-1.

That set up a quarterfinal meeting with Aravane Rezai, who survived a duel with Varvara Lepchenko 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-2.

In other second-round action, Tathiana Garbin surprised Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-2, 6-2. Sanchez was coming off a title last week is Bastad.

Garbin's quarterfinal opponent will be Olga Govortsova, who upset sixth-seeded Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-2.
