Becker wins Legg Mason match; Roddick next

Washington, Aug. 5: Germany's Benjamin Becker tallied 27 aces Tuesday in a marathon win over American Robby Ginepri at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington.

Becker finally got the better of the game American 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-4) and moves on to face top seed Andy Roddick in Wednesday's second round.

Roddick has beaten Becker twice but the two have not played each other since 2007.

Ginepri led the third-set tiebreak 4-1 but Becker rallied to win six consecutive points.

In other play Tuesday, defending tournament champion Juan Martin Del Potro of Spain came back to beat Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and Germany's Tommy Haas, a semi-finalist at Wimbledon, topped Frank Dancevic 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

Querrey wins opening round match

Los Angeles, July 30: Sam Querrey, who lost in the finals of his last two tournaments, moved past the first round of the Los Angeles Tennis Open Wednesday with a straight-sets win.

Querrey defeated Denis Istomin in the last of the first-round matches 6-2, 6-0.

Querry, seeded sixth this week, recently fell to Rajeev Ram in the finals of the Hall of Fame Championships and then dropped a decision to Robby Ginepri in the finals of the Indianapolis Championships.

His second-round opponent will be qualifier Ryan Sweeting.

No. 8 seed Marat Safin earned a quarterfinal berth by outlasting Ernests Gulbis 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Safin will meet top-seeded Tommy Haas in the next round if Haas can get past Jesse Levine.

Isner ousts No. 7 Becker at LA Tennis Open

Los Angeles, July 29: American John Isner knocked off Germany's Benjamin Becker 7-6 (8) and 7-6 (3) in the toughest match of Tuesday's opening round at the LA Tennis Open.

Isner had to go to the tie-breaker before finally winning the match over the seventh-seeded Becker and moving on to face Marco Baghdatis of Cyprus.

Baghdatis, a finalist in this year's Australian Open, beat Canadian Frank Dencevich 7-6 (3), 6-3.

Russian Marat Safin rallied to beat Robby Ginepri of the United States 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and will face Ernest Gulbis of Latvia Wednesday.

Ginepri victorious in Indianapolis tennis

Indianapolis, July 26: Robby Ginepri beat fellow American Sam Querrey in straight sets Sunday and won the Indianapolis Tennis Championships for the second time.

Ginepri cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Querrey in just over an hour. It was the first time the two players met in a match on the ATP Tour.

The title was the 26-year-old Ginepri's third on the tour.

Entering the tournament, Ginepri was ranked No. 95 in the world.

"This tournament is very special for me," Ginepri said. "Having won twice here is an amazing feeling. When I won here in 2005 I was about in the same position, around No. 100. This one has to be more special, as I really never expected it."

Querrey, Ginepri to meet in final at Indy

Indianapolis -- Third-seeded American Sam Querrey will meet fellow American Robby Ginepri in Sunday's final of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships.

Querrey defeated Canadian Frank Dancevic 6-4, 6-4, and Ginepri defeated American John Isner 6-4, 6-3 in Saturday's semifinals.

This was the first time Ginepri had reached the semifinals in an ATP tournament since he reached his first career semifinal in March 2008 at Las Vegas.

Ginepriand and Querrey have never met in a tennis tournament.

Ginepri, Amritraj win; Becker loses

Newport -- Former champion Robby Ginepri and 2008 runner-up Prakash Amritraj were opening round winners Monday at the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, R.I.

American Ginepri, the 2003 Newport champion, defeated Spaniard Santiago Ventura 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 and Indian wild card Amritraj beat Thai Danai Udomchoke 6-1, 6-4. Amritraj is the son of former ATP star Vijay Amritraj, who lost to Frenchman Fabrice Santoro in last year's Newport finale.

Santoro is this week's highest seed, at No. 2. Top-seeded American Mardy Fish pulled out to join the United States for its Davis Cup quarterfinal at Croatia this weekend.

Fourth-seeded German Benjamin Becker lost to American Brendan Evans 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 7-5.
