Wifi transmissions raise concerns

Alphen Aan Den Rijn, Netherlands -- A biologist in the Netherlands said recent experiment that tested the health of trees related to WiFi transmission exposure was not definitive.

"We have to be very careful what kind of conclusion can be drawn. (In fact), we cannot draw conclusions," said Dr. Andre van Lammeren, an associate professor of plant biology at Wageningen University, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.

Lammeren placed 25 small trees in two separate cabinets, exposing one group to WiFi transmissions. Three months later, the exposed treeshad higher incidents of leaf damage.

 Is the Chinese miracle merely a mirage? This wasn't a good week for a couple of companies in the world's most populous nation. Chinese insurer CNinsure (Nasdaq: CISG) and mobile-services specialist KongZhong (Nasdaq: KONG) were slammed hard after posting uninspiring quarterly results, with the shares suffering double-digit percentage declines on Tuesday.

 

GM predicts bright Q3 results, gears up for IPO

As General Motors (GM) is preparing for initial public offer (IPO) on Nov. 18, the company has predicted that it has earned $2.1 billion between July and September, this year.

It's earnings season, and the quarterly reports have been largely positive this week.

U.S. markets mixed

New York -- U.S. markets were mixed Friday with the third-quarter reporting season showing decidedly uneven results so far.

In the current week's reports, Gary Jenkins, head of fixed income at Evolution Securities, said a majority of reports -- 85 out of 103 -- showed that earnings beat expectations, but only 46 of those reported revenue that exceeded expectations, The Wall Street Journal reported.

In early afternoon trading the Dow Jones industrial average lost 28.46 points, 0.26 percent, to 11,118.11. The Standard & Poor's 500 gained 0.07 percent, 0.37, to 1,180.63. The Nasdaq composite index rose 0.56 percent, 13.86, to 2,473.53.

The benchmark 10-year treasury note fell 7/32, to yield 2.565 percent.
