Earlier, third-seeded James Blake suffered a 6-3, 6-2 defeat against fifth-seeded compatriot Mardy Fish.

Fish, a 2004 San Jose finalist in the tournament, fired 16 service aces and won 27-of-29 points on his first serve to claim his second consecutive win over Blake, who was hampered by an injured right ankle and later pulled out of his scheduled doubles semifinal.

"I didn't know he was that injured until the first game he served -- the second game of the match," Fish told reporters. "It's obviously bad luck for him and it's a testament for how much respect he has for the game. He's never pulled out of a match in his whole career."
