Arab fiction contest includes 7 women

Doha, Qatar -- Six finalists for the International Prize for the Arabic Fiction 2011 award have been named in Qatar, judges said.

The award's panel of judges announced the candidates during an event at the central library of the Qatar Foundation in Doha, Gulf News reported.

"This is an objective neutral international award," said Jonathan Taylor, chairman of the award's board of trustees. "The real value of each novel is the sole fact adopted by the panel in selecting the contenders. There is no discrimination either against ethic or gender."

Qatar to host 2022 World Cup

Zurich, Switzerland -- Qatar beat out Australia, South Korea, Japan and the United States to host the 2022 World Cup, FIFA announced Thursday.

It will be the first time a World Cup will be hosted by a Middle Eastern nation. The United States, South Korea and Japan all previously have hosted the tournament.

"The World Cup is going to new lands and I am a happy president as we speak of the development of football," FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter said in congratulating Qatar.

"Thank you for believing in change and believing in expanding the game and thank you for giving Qatar a chance," said Sheik Mohammed bin Hamad al-Thani, who chaired Qatar's bid. "We will not let you down. We will make you proud."

Stosur tops Wozniacki in Qatar

Doha, Qatar -- Samantha Stosur pulled off the first upset of the WTA Championships in Qatar with a straight-win Wednesday over world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki.

Stosur, seeded fifth, didn't lose her serve in a 6-4, 6-3 win against Wozniacki in a Maroon Group match. The decision left Stosur 2-0 with one round-robin match left while Wozniacki is 1-1.

Francesca Schiavone and Elena Dementieva, who had Wednesday off, are both 0-1 in the group.

Stosur took the lead with a ninth-game service break in the first set and added another in the second set for a 3-1 lead. She saved all six of the break points she faced, the last coming in the final game before Stosur took the final three points for the match.

Wozniacki opens WTA Championships with win

Doha, Qatar -- World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki opened round-robin play Tuesday at the WTA Championships in Qatar with a solid win over Elena Dementieva.

Wozniacki, who has won 25 of her last 26 matches, breezed past Dementieva, the No. 7-seed, 6-1, 6-1 in 54 minutes. Wozniacki lost only eight points in her seven service games and claimed 60 percent of the points off Dementieva's serve.

In the other Maroon Group match Tuesday, fifth-seeded Samantha Stosur rallied for a 6-4, 6-4 win over fourth-seeded Francesca Schiavone. Stosur dropped serve twice while Schiavone was building a 4-0 lead in the first set, but she then broke Schiavone at love and ran off six straight wins.

Boeing to open Qatar office

Doha, Qatar -- Boeing's president for Middle East operations said increased opportunities in Qatar had prompted the company to establish a new base in the UAE country.

Executive Paul Kinscherff said Boeing is "Currently … operating in Dubai, but given the circumstances, opening a full-fledged office in Qatar has become a necessity. And it's going to become a reality soon," Gulf News reported Thursday.

Kinscherff said eight Boeing 777's were delivered to Qatar Airways this year. In addition, the carrier has ordered both Dreamliner 787 and C-17 Globemaster III planes for future delivery.

Qatari diplomat released after bomb scare on Denver flight

After sparking a mid-air bomb scare by smoking in a Jet restroom, Qatari diplomat Mohammed Al Modadi was released from custody as the officials were convinced he did not intend any harm.
