Serra a first-round upset loser in Sweden

Bastad, Sweden -- No. 8-seeded Florent Serra was ousted in straight sets Monday in first-round play at the Swedish Open.

Potito Starace raced past Serra 6-2, 6-2 in 61 minutes. Starace won 72 percent of the points on serve and 61 percent for the match. He didn't suffer a service break but piled up four in eight games against Serra.

The other three main draw matches Monday all went three sets.

Andreas Vinciguerra slipped by Daniel Brands 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (5-7), 6-4; Fabio Fognini rallied for a 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 6-4 win over Filip Prpic; and Pere Riba topped Peter Luczak 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).

Chardy survives first round in Russia

St. Petersburg, Russia -- Jeremy Chardy, who at No. 4 was the highest seed in action Tuesday, stormed past Petru-Alexandru Luncanu 6-2, 6-2 at the St. Petersburg Open.

Chardy has reached the semifinals on the ATP circuit four times this year and won the Mercedes Cup, but he had lost in the opening round of his previous four tournaments.

No. 5 seed Igor Andreev also advanced Tuesday with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Potito Starace.

Qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky pulled off the biggest surprise of the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win over sixth-seeded Evgeny Korolev.

Two-time defending champion Andy Murray chose not to compete here this week. No. 1 seed Mikhail Youzhny, coming off a tournament victory in Moscow last weekend, will meet Andrey Golubev Wednesday.
