Driver in deadly Adenhart crash was DUI

Santa Ana, Calif., -- The driver of the vehicle carrying Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart the night of his death had an illegal blood alcohol level for her age, prosecutors say.

Prosecutors in Orange County, Calif., said 20-year-old Courtney Frances Stewart had a blood-alcohol level of .06 the night an alleged drunken driver crashed into her vehicle, killing her, Adenhart and law student Henry Nigel Pearson, The Orange County (Calif.) Register said Thursday.

California drivers under the age of 21 cannot operate a vehicle legally if their blood alcohol level is above .01.

Deputy District Attorney Susan Price said Stewart's level was determined by toxicology tests conducted by the Orange County Coroner.

Adenhart suspect pleads not guilty

Santa Ana, Calif.-- A California man pleaded not guilty Monday to charges in connection with the death of Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two others.

Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, of San Gabriel, entered the plea at his arraignment in Santa Ana, Calif. Gallo is charged with three counts of murder, drunk driving and fleeing the scene of an accident, the Los Angeles Times said.

Investigators said Gallo's blood alcohol content was three times the legal limit at the time of the collision that killed Adenhart, 22; Courtney Stewart, 20, of Diamond Bar, Calif.; and Henry Pearson, 25, of Manhattan Beach.

Prosecutors said Gallo ran a red light and slammed his minivan into the car the victims were riding in.

Adenhart remembered at Md. memorial

Williamsport, Md. -- About 200 people turned out in Maryland for a private memorial service for Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart, who was killed last week in a car crash.

The turnout for Thursday's service included Angels' owner Arte Moreno, General Manager Tony Reagins, Manager Mike Scioscia and pitching coach Mike Butcher, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday. Angels' pitchers Dustin Moseley, Jered Weaver and John Lackey also attended the service in Williamsport, Md.

Adenhart, who grew up in Western Maryland, was 22 when he was killed last week, hours after his first start of 2009 -- and just his fourth as a major leaguer. A funeral procession of 70 cars accompanied Adenhart's body to Greenlawn Memorial Park, the Times said.

DA announces charges in Adenhart crash

Fullerton, Calif., -- California prosecutors Friday filed murder, drunken driving and other charges against a suspect in the crash that killed LA Angels' pitcher Nick Adenhart.

Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas told reporters the suspect, Andrew Gallo, acted "selfishly and recklessly" in allegedly causing the crash that killed Adenhart, 22, and two others -- Courtney Frances Stewart, 20, and Henry Pearson, 25. Rackauckas said Gallo had a previous conviction on DUI charges, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Gallo, 22, faces up to 55 years to life in prison if convicted of all charges against him, which include fleeing the scene of an accident. Prosecutors said Gallo was quickly apprehended after running from the scene of the crash.
