No deal yet for Phoenix Coyotes

Glendale, Ariz. -- The city of Glendale, Ariz., hopes to negotiate a deal with a Chicago businessman that would keep the Phoenix Coyotes in the region, officials say.

The city council got a progress report Tuesday on talks with Matthew Hulsizer, founder and chief executive officer of the options trading firm PLAK6 Investments, The Arizona Republic reported. Councilman Manny Martinez told the newspaper the negotiations were proceeding more slowly than some officials hoped.

The National Hockey League acquired the team last year after its previous owner declared the Coyotes bankrupt. The team, formerly the Winnipeg Jets, moved to the Phoenix area in 1996.

Bulls owner offers to buy Phoenix Coyotes

Montreal, Ontario -- Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf heads a group offering $148 million to buy the Phoenix Coyotes, an NHL executive has confirmed.

The league said in a statement before the NHL draft that the offer was submitted in bankruptcy court documents in Phoenix Friday afternoon.

"We're aware the offer has been made," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said.

"We're pleased there's an offer to own and operate the Coyotes in Phoenix."

The league said the offer by the Reinsdorf group calls for a new Jobing.com Arena lease with the city of Glendale and unspecified new agreements with other creditors -- including the NHL, which has been funding the cash-strapped franchise.

Ownership battle on for Phoenix Coyotes

Toronto -- The National Hockey League is resisting efforts by a Canadian billionaire to buy the bankrupt Phoenix Coyotes and relocate them to Canada.

The league has repeatedly said the franchise won't be moved to southern Ontario near the Toronto and Buffalo Sabres franchises, the Globe and Mail reported.

However, Jim Balsillie, co-founder of the Blackberry manufacturer Research in Motion in Waterloo, Ontario, has been working behind the scenes in his third bid to become an owner of one of the league's 30 teams, the report said.

The Coyotes filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Tuesday in Arizona, and Balsillie's $212.5 million offer to purchase the franchise was included in the court filing, Canada's National Post reported.
