Haven, Wis. -- U.S. golfer Phil Mickelson stunned reporters Tuesday by revealing he is receiving treatments for a severe form of arthritis.
The world's No. 2-ranked golfer said he has psoriatic arthritis, a condition that affects the joints, particularly the fingers and toes, Gannett Wisconsin Media reported.
Mickelson, preparing for the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, said he visited the Mayo Clinic after the British Open to have the condition assessed and has been under doctors' care since, but expects a complete recovery.

Akron -- Retief Goosen took the lead at the midway point of the Bridgestone Invitational Friday and Phil Mickelson moved closer to the top spot in the world rankings.
Goosen, a two-time winner of the U.S. Open who has just one victory on American soil in the past five years, shot a 4-under 66 at the Firestone Country Club for a two-day total of 133.
Tied for second at the World Golf Championship event were Mickelson and Justin Leonard. Mickelson had a 68 and Leonard a 66, leaving them at 134.

Pebble Beach, Calif. -- Graeme McDowell took the lead at the U.S. Open Friday and Phil Mickelson charged into contention with the lowest round of the tournament to date.
McDowell, from Northern Ireland and a five-time winner on the European Tour, shot a 3-under 68 early in the day at the Pebble Beach Golf Links and his 36-hole total of 139 put him two shots in front.
Mickelson, who began the second round in a tie for 66th place, birdied five of the first eight holes and shot a 5-under 66 -- two shots lower than anyone else has managed on the difficult ocean side course.

Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. -- Robert Allenby and J.B. Holmes took advantage of perfect scoring conditions Thursday and shared the lead after one round of the Players Championship.
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson both wound up four shots off the lead on a day that saw 86 players break par at the TPC-Sawgrass Stadium Course. It was the second-best day of scoring in the tournament's 26-year history.
Holmes played in the morning and Allenby played in the afternoon, each firing a 6-under 66.
Jason Bohn, Ben Crane, Heath Slocum, Luke Donald, Ryuji Imada, Ryan Moore, Lee Westwood and 49-year-old Kenny Perry were all a shot back.
None of the 20 former major championship winners in the 144-player field was among the first 20 on the leaderboard after the first round.

Charlotte, N.C. -- Masters champion Phil Mickelson pulled out of a pro-am event Wednesday due to illness but says he'll play in this week's Quail Hollow Championship.
Mickelson left the Quail Hollow course after teeing off with his amateur partners and playing six holes, The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported.
A statement distributed by the golfer said he was ill when he arrived in Charlotte Tuesday night and was treated for dehydration after leaving the course Wednesday.
The statement indicated Mickelson "fully expects" to tee off as scheduled at 12:50 p.m. EDT Thursday in the PGA event, the newspaper said.

Virginia Water -- Phil Mickelson's third Masters title, finished off with a bogey-free round Sunday, returned him to the No. 2 spot in the men's world golf rankings.
Mickelson, who also won the event in 2004 and 2006, turned in a 16-under 272 and won the season's first major tournament by three strokes over Lee Westwood.
The win was capped with an emotional meeting off the 18th tee when Mickelson's wife Amy, at her first tournament since being diagnosed with breast cancer last summer, was on hand to give her husband a long congratulatory embrace.
The victory allowed Mickelson to retake the second slot in the world rankings, switching places with Steve Stricker, who is again No. 3. Strickler finished tied for 30th at Augusta National.

Augusta-- Phil Mickelson carded a 5-under 67 Sunday, rallying to post a three-stroke victory in the Masters Tournament and claim his third green championship jacket.
Mickelson, who won his fourth major title, ended the day at 16-under 272, three shots ahead of third-round leader Lee Westwood with a 71.
Anthony Kim finished third after firing a 7-under 65 for 12-under 276.
In his return to golf, Tiger Woods shot a 3-under 69 Sunday and finished in a tie for fourth place with K.J. Choi, who also had a 69, at minus-11.
Fred Couples, 50, finished with a 2-under 70, coming in sixth at 9-under 279.

Lajolla, Calif. -- Phil Mickelson, on the eve of his first competitive appearance of the year, said Wednesday it was important for golf that Tiger Woods eventually return.
"Golf needs him to come back," Mickelson said. "It's important for him to come back and be a part of the sport. But right now he's got a lot more important things going on in his life."
Woods has not been seen in public since the Thanksgiving weekend, when an auto accident in which he was involved touched off a series of revelations that caused him to admit marital infidelity. Woods later said he was taking a leave of absence from the sport while trying to sort out his private life.

Virginia Water, England -- Second-ranked Phil Mickelson's victory in the HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai moved him closer to top-ranked Tiger Woods in the world golf rankings.
Mickelson gained 1.25 points and now trails Woods by under seven -- 15.70 to 9.22 -- in the rankings released Monday.
The 39-year-old Mickelson's win Sunday was his fourth title of the year.
Woods finished in a tie for sixth in Shanghai.
Steve Stricker remains No. 3 in the rankings. Lee Westwood moved up to No. 4, pushing Paul Casey to No. 5.
Padraig Harrington, Henrik Stenson, Kenny Perry, Sergio Garcia and Jim Furyk, in order, complete the Top 10.

Shanghai -- Phil Mickelson held off Ernie Els, whose course-record-tying effort Sunday made for a dramatic finish, and won the HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai.
Mickelson shot 3-under-par 69 Sunday and finished the tournament at 17-under 271. Els bogeyed the final hole but still had a final-round 63 for a 72-hole score of 15-under while Ryan Moore came in third at -14.
Tiger Woods, playing in the final group with Mickelson, was 4-over through eight holes but fought back to even par on the day. He finished at 12-under in a tie for sixth place.
Els had an eagle at the par-5 eighth hole that put him at 6-under on the round. He kept his charge going with four birdies on the back nine, including at the par-3 17th, which put him into the lead.

Shanghai -- Phil Mickelson had three birdies over his last five holes Saturday and owns the lead heading to the final round of the HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai.
Mickelson's 5-under-par 67 Saturday put him at 14-under for the tournament and vaulted him past second-round leaders Tiger Woods and Nick Watney, who each shot 70 Saturday and are at 12-under.
Mickelson and Woods -- the world's top two golfers -- are paired with each other for Sunday's final round at the Sheshan International course.
Ryan Moore, at 11-under, is in fourth place and Lee Westwood had a 7-under 65 Saturday to move to 10-under for the tournament.

Virginia Water, England -- Troy Matteson's weekend playoff victory in the Frys.com Open in Arizona moved him up 122 places in the world golf rankings.
Matteson jumped from 288 to 166 on the list, which was updated Monday.
The top of the rankings remained unchanged, with Tiger Woods No. 1, Phil Mickelson No. 2, Steve Stricker third, Paul Casey fourth and Lee Westwood No. 5.
Padraig Harrington, Henrik Stenson, Kenny Perry, Jim Furyk and Sergio Garcia complete the Top 10.
