Phillies decide to start Pedro in Game 3

Denver -- Pedro Martinez, who joined the Philadelphia Phillies in mid-season, will be their starting pitcher in Game 3 of National League Division Series.

Philadelphia Manager Charlie Manual had considered starting Joe Blanton or J.A. Happ but decided on Martinez, a 37-year-old right-hander who last pitched nearly two weeks ago in a game against Houston, a report on the Phillies team Web site said Friday.

Martinez is a three-time winner of the Cy Young Award, which goes each year to the top pitchers in the National and American Leagues.

The Phillies and Colorado Rockies, tied 1-1 in their best-of-five playoff, meet Saturday at Coors Field in Denver. Game time is 9:37 p.m. EDT.

MLB: Philadelphia 5, Washington 3

Washington, Sept. 8: Raul Ibanez hit two home runs and the Philadelphia Phillies overcame a shaky ninth inning by Brad Lidge Tuesday to beat the Washington Nationals 5-3.

The Phillies hit five solo home runs, including three in the seventh inning when Jayson Werth and Ibanez went back-to-back and Carlos Ruiz homered two batters later.

Ibanez and Chase Utley each hit their 30th home runs and joined teammates Werth and Ryan Howard as the only Phillies foursome to hit 30 or more homers in a season. It was the first time in 10 years that the Phillies have hit five solo home runs in a game.

Pedro Martinez (4-0) held the Nats to three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Lidge loaded the bases in the ninth with one out before being pulled.

Martinez has one-year deal with Phillies

strong>St. Louis, July 14: The defending champion Philadelphia Phillies have signed three-time Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez to a one-year contract, sources told MLB.com Tuesday.

One source told the baseball Web site the Phillies will announce the signing of a $1 million deal with $1.5 million in incentives Wednesday. Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. declined comment, MLB.com said.

The 37-year-old right-hander passed a physical Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Martinez, unaffiliated since having his worst season at the major-league level in 2008, is expected to help a pitching staff that ranks 14th in the National League in earned-run average (4.61) at the All-Star break.
