Police: Chasen slaying started as robbery

Los Angeles -- Harold Martin Smith most likely killed celebrity publicist Ronni Chasen in a robbery gone bad, police in Beverly Hills, Calif., said Wednesday.

Chasen, 64, was gunned down Nov. 16 as she drove home after a party celebrating the Cher-Christina Aguilera movie "Burlesque." Smith fatally shot himself Dec. 1 as police attempted to serve a search warrant in the lobby of a Los Angeles apartment building.

The Hollywood Reporter quoted Beverly Hills Police Chief David Snowden as describing the investigation as "open and active" in a press conference Wednesday.

High praise for Aniston from co-star

New York -- Actress Malin Akerman had nothing but praise for co-star Jennifer Aniston during an appearance at a party in New York this week.

"She is every guy's dream," Akerman told People magazine when asked about her co-star in the upcoming film "Wanderlust."

"Jennifer is one of my favorite people now," she said at the launch party for Google's Boutiques.com. "Not only is she an extraordinary actress, she is such a loving, genuine woman and fun. You want her to be your best friend."

Akerman added she thought Jen was "amazing."

"I kind of expected her to be amazing," she said. "I would have been more surprised if she hadn't been the great, down-to-earth girl that she is."

Superstar rapper Lil Wayne came out of prison on Thursday after spending eight months in New York’s Rikers Island jail.

'Snooki' Halloween costumes popular

Trenton, N.J. -- One of the stars of cable television's "Jersey Shore" says the key component of a Halloween costume portraying the partier's lifestyle is the "hair."

Costumes featuring the show's hard-partying stars are flying off the shelf this year, People Magazine reported.

The popular program features a house full of young people who live for the party life, the report said.

"I think that's so cool. A million Snookis running around, a million Situations and Pauly D's, it's funny," said Paul "Pauly D" Delvecchio.
"Snooki," "The Situation" and "Pauly D" are all cast members; Snooki is known for her extremely tall hair style, low-cut tops and foul language, and Delvecchio is notable for the amount of hair gel he uses, the report said.

Detroit Halloween bash 'in jeopardy'

Detroit -- Organizers of a large-scale Halloween block party in Detroit said demands from city officials could lead to the event's cancellation.

The people behind the Theatre Bizarre Halloween Party, scheduled Saturday near the former State Fairgrounds, said city inspectors are insisting they obtain a temporary liquor license and they fear more demands may be forthcoming, The Detroit News reported Thursday.

"The whole party is in jeopardy," said Ken Poirier, organizer of the event. "The (major) sticking point is that we don't have a liquor license."
Poirier said the city also told him a food inspector would have to visit the day of the party, costing organizers $750.

'Detroit 1-8-7' red-carpet event in works

Detroit-- The Motor City is preparing a red-carpet premiere for "Detroit 1-8-7," the first prime-time drama produced in the city, a show representative said.

The party, scheduled for Sept. 7, is expected to showcase red carpet arrivals of the drama's stars and a special screening of the inaugural episode, the Detroit Free Press reported Monday.

"Detroit 1-8-7," starring Michael Imperioli of "The Sopranos," James McDaniel from "NYPD Blue" and Erin Cummings of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," debuts Sept.
21 on ABC. The crime drama follows the men and women of Detroit Police Department's homicide unit.

Woman marks 100th year with hula party

Miami -- A Florida woman marked her 100th birthday with a Hawaiian-themed party complete with Polynesian dancers at the hospital where she lives.

Dolly Griffin, who lives at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Long Term Care Center in Miami, marked the 100th anniversary of her birth Monday with a party featuring four Polynesian dancers, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday. About 30 residents, workers and friends helped her celebrate.

"When I see these girls dancing, it makes me realize just how much I miss it," said Griffin, who opened a dance studio in 1930 and taught dance until she moved to the care center 3 years ago.

A pair of male dancers helped Griffin relive her dancing days by leading the revelers in a hula.

Police: Vodka mocking led to shooting

San Antontio -- Police said an uninvited man who was ridiculed for his bottle of vodka shot and wounded a guest at a party in San Antonio.

Investigators said the host of the party on the West Side allowed the man to enter early Sunday to avoid a confrontation, but the party-crasher became angry when revelers mocked his bottle of Nuvo, the San Antonio Express-News reported Monday.

An incident report said party guests told the man the "bottle looked like a lipstick cap, indicating that (he) is or was a homosexual, which made (him) upset."

Police said the man left the party and returned with a handgun, which he first fired into the air, then aimed shots at guests in the back yard.

Mass. party full of twins, triplets

Brockton, Mass. -- Organizers of a Massachusetts party said more than 400 twins, triplets, siblings and parents attended the holiday celebration.

Keeping Pace with Multiple Miracles, which organized Sunday's party at Shaw's Center in Brockton, said dozens of families with twins and triplets came out to pose for pictures with Santa and socialize with families faced with similar situations, the Boston Globe reported Monday.

"No one's going to say, 'Oh, my God. How do you do it?' It's like you're anonymous,'' Donna Baker, co-founder of Keeping Pace with Multiple Miracles and mother of 15-year-old triplets and a 19-year-old, said of the party's comforting atmosphere for parents of multiples.

Mother says she slept through teen's party

Buffalo Grove, Ill. -- A suburban Chicago mother she slept through her teenage son's raucous party and was unaware his 17 guests were drinking alcohol.

Margaret Couch, 46, was charged with allowing underage drinking in her home after her son and his guests, ages 16 to 19, were cited for unlawful possession and consumption of alcohol, the Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday.

Police were called to the house at 3:20 a.m. Sunday when neighbors complained of loud music and people yelling, Buffalo Grove Police spokesman Steve Husak said.

The teenagers were given breath tests and cited by police before being released to their parents, Husak said.
