Harrington leads at Sun City

Sun City, South Africa -- Padraig Harrington, the winner of three major championships, shot a 6-under 66 Thursday to seize a one-shot advantage at the Nedbank Challenge.

Harrington is taking part in this 12-player tournament for the first time in four years.

Ross Fisher's 67 left him alone in second place and Lee Westwood was another shot back.

If Westwood finishes among the top four this week, he will retain his No. 1 world ranking no matter what Tiger Woods does in the tournament he is hosting in California. Woods held the lead after 18 holes of that event.

Miguel Angel Jimenez was alone in fourth after shooting a 69 at the Gary Player Country Club. Defending champion Robert Allenby and Justin Rose both had a 70.

Harrington tied for Travelers lead

Cromwell, Conn. -- Padraig Harrington, a two-time British Open winner who is tuning up for that event, owned a piece of the lead Thursday at the Travelers Championship.

Harrington, who will go after his third British Open crown in four years next month, shot a first-round, 6-under 64 at the TPC-River Highlands course to share first place with Charlie Wi, Mathew Goggin and Justin Rose.

Rose birdied five straight holes on the back nine for his 64 and backed up his recent showing at The Memorial -- where he posted his first victory on American soil.

Those tied at 65 included Vijay Singh, Bubba Watson, Kevin Sutherland, Matt Jones, Aron Price, former British Open champion Ben Curtis and current American Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin.

Harrington rejoins Top 5 in golf rankings

Virginia Water, England -- Ireland's Padraig Harrington rejoined the Top 5 Monday in the world golf rankings.

Harrington had slipped to No. 6 last week. Paul Casey, who had replaced him in the fifth spot, is back in sixth this week.

Tiger Woods is No. 1 for the 234th consecutive week and the 576th week of his career.

Woods said Monday he won't participate this week in a tournament he hosts, the Chevron World Challenge in California, because of injuries he received in a recent car accident.

Phil Mickelson is No. 2, Steve Stricker No. 3 and Lee Westwood No. 4 in the rankings.

Rounding out the Top 10, in order, are Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia, Kenny Perry and Rory McIlroy.

Matteson makes big gain in golf rankings

Virginia Water, England -- Troy Matteson's weekend playoff victory in the Frys.com Open in Arizona moved him up 122 places in the world golf rankings.

Matteson jumped from 288 to 166 on the list, which was updated Monday.

The top of the rankings remained unchanged, with Tiger Woods No. 1, Phil Mickelson No. 2, Steve Stricker third, Paul Casey fourth and Lee Westwood No. 5.

Padraig Harrington, Henrik Stenson, Kenny Perry, Jim Furyk and Sergio Garcia complete the Top 10.

Tiger Woods rallies for 70th PGA win

Akron, Ohio Aug. 9: Tiger Woods rallied and Padraig Harrington faltered late Sunday, and Woods went on to win the EGC-Bridgestone Invitational for his 70th PGA Tour victory.

Woods took the lead on the 16th hole, when Harrington unraveled with a triple-bogey 8. Woods finished with a five-under 65 for the round and 12 under for the tournament, edging Robert Allenby and Harrington by one stroke and winning the Akron event for the seventh time.

With 70 PGA wins -- five this year -- Woods is three behind Jack Nicklaus for second place all-time.

"It was a great battle all day," said Woods.

Harrington leads Woods by three shots

Akron, Ohio. -- Padraig Harrington of Ireland posted a 3-under 67 Saturday to take a three-stroke lead after three rounds of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Harrington, a three-time major champion, completed 54 holes at 10-under-par 200 for his third 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour. He won one of the previous two chances when leading after three rounds.

Six-time winner Tiger Woods had the low round of the day with a 5-under 65. He finished three rounds at 7-under 203. Woods, the world's No. 1 player, won this golf tournament three straight years, from 1999 to 2001, and again from 2005 to
2007.

Harrington keeps Bridgestone lead

Akron, Ohio Aug. 7: Padraig Harrington kept his lead at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational Friday, while Tiger Woods failed to make a charge in his bid for a fifth victory in 2009.

Harrington made changes in his swing after winning two major championships last year and promptly began to struggle.

A 64 in the opening round, however, gave him confidence those changes are paying off and he added a 69 Friday at the Firestone Country Club South Course.

His 7-under 133 total gave him a one-shot lead over Tim Clark and a two-shot advantage over Scott Verplank.

Woods, who won the Buick Open title a week ago, settled for a 70 on a day when 27 members of the 80-player field had better scores. Woods, though, was well within challenging range at 2-under 138.

Harrington leads Woods by 4 at Firestone

Akron, Ohio Aug. 6: Padraig Harrington, who has not come close to equaling his career year of 2008, shot a 6-under 64 Thursday to take the lead at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Harrington won two major titles last year, but has only one top-15 finish in 14 appearances on the PGA Tour this season. He finished tied for 65th last month in his bid to win a third straight British Open title.

In his first tournament since the British Open, Harrington rode a hot putter at the Firestone Country Club's South Course to his lowest round of the year.

Prayad Marksaeng, Tim Clark and Scott Verplank shared second place at 66 while Steve Stricker, Ian Poulter and Zach Johnson were all at 67.

British Open begins Thursday at Turnberry

Turnberry, Scotland July 15: The world's best golfers gather Thursday for the start of the British Open, being played just down the road from where it was first contested 149 years ago.

Tiger Woods will be trying for his first major title of the year on a course with which he was unfamiliar until this week.

For the first time since 1994, the tournament is being played on the Turnberry links on the west coast of Scotland, less than 20 miles from Prestwick. It was at Prestwick in 1860 that Willie Park shot 174 over 36 holes to win the inaugural event.

Since then, only four players -- Tom Morris Jr., Jamie Anderson, Robert Ferguson and Peter Thomson -- have won the British Open three straight times.
