Sydney -- Officials at Australia's Taronga Zoo said an overweight kookaburra has shed more than 2 ounces, with 0.7 ounces left to go before it can be released.

Zookeepers at the Sydney facility said the female bird weighed 19.22 ounces, 40 percent more than the species average, when a resident found it unable to fly and being chased by dogs May 4. Officials said the bird weighed in at 16.97 ounces Monday, with 0.7 ounces left to reach the target weight set by officials, The Mosman Daily reported Thursday.

"I've seen many kookaburras, but never before have I seen one so fat," said Gemma Watkinson, a wildlife hospital nurse with the Taronga Zoo.
