15 in the running for visual effects Oscar

Beverly Hills, Calif. -- Fifteen films have been selected as semifinalists for the Achievement in Visual Effects Oscar, Hollywood's Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said.

The titles were announced Friday.

Listed in alphabetical order, they are: "Alice in Wonderland"; "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader"; "Clash of the Titans"; "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1"; "Hereafter"; "Inception";

"Iron Man 2"; "The Last Airbender"; "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief"; "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time"; "Scott Pilgrim vs the World"; "Shutter Island"; "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"; "Tron: Legacy"; and "Unstoppable."

Godard won't attend Governors Awards

Los Angeles -- French New Wave film director Jean-Luc Godard will not attend the Governors Awards in Los Angeles to accept his honorary Oscar, organizers said Monday.

No reason was given for the 79-year-old filmmaker's absence from the planned Nov. 13 event.

"He reiterated his thanks for the award," Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom

Sherak said in a statement, "and also sent his good wishes to the other individuals being honored the same night -- Kevin Brownlow, Francis Ford Coppola and Eli Wallach -- who he refers to as 'the three other musketeers.'"

The ceremony, which is being produced by Sid Ganis and Don Mischer, will pay tribute to Godard through film clips and commentary by his admirers.

Mo'Nique returns to TV after Oscar win

New York -- Mo'Nique has returned to work on her late-night chat show after winning an Oscar at Sunday's Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, BET said.

Her first new episode of "The Mo'Nique Show" since winning the statuette for her portrayal of an abusive mother in "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' By Sapphire" is to air Thursday.

The network said her guests that night will be Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson, Tony Award winner and NAACP Image Award-nominated actress Anika Noni Rose and Academy Award-winning rappers Three 6 Mafia.

Mo'Nique wins supporting actress Oscar

Los Angeles -- Television personality and comedian Mo'Nique won the Oscar for best supporting actress Sunday night in Los Angeles.

She picked up the prize for her work in the drama "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire."

"I would like to thank the Academy (of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) for showing that it can be about the performance and not the politics," Mo'Nique said as she accepted her award. "I would like to thank Ms. Hattie McDaniel for enduring all that she had to, so I would not have to. (Executive producers) Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey, because you touched it, the whole world saw ('Precious...') My entire BET family, my 'Precious' family, thank you so much. ... God bless us, all."

Best actor Oscar set for Chicago display

Chicago -- The statuette to be presented to this year's best actor Oscar winner is to go on display in Chicago, ahead of next month's Academy Awards ceremony.

The trophy will be part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' "Meet the Oscars, Chicago" event, presented by Kodak, at The Shops at North Bridge on Michigan Avenue.

The admission-free exhibition will open Feb. 25 and run through March 7.
"Meet the Oscars, Chicago" also will give movie fans the opportunity to have their picture taken holding an actual Oscar statuette.

Walters' next Oscar special to be her last

New York -- ABC's Barbara Walters said in New York Monday the upcoming 29th edition of her Oscar special will be her last.

"I think I'm sick of them," the Los Angeles Times quoted Walters, 80, as saying on her daytime chat show "The View." "I feel I've been there, done that.

Twenty-nine years is enough ... You can switch the format a little bit and I love the fact that we have these stars (Sandra Bullock and Mo'Nique) and they're both nominated. ... I felt it was enough."
