Pharma Ups the Dividend Ante

There's no way to sugarcoat this: It was not a pretty year for pharmaceutical companies. While the S&P saw substantial gains over the last year, with the exception of Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY) and Novartis (NYSE: NVS), every other major pharmaceutical company listed on the U.S. exchange saw their shares decrease. And neither of the two that were in positive territory actually surpassed the S&P 500.

"I am highly confident that at the end of the day, when all the cards are on the table, we will be, not only the JAK1 and 2 inhibitor that is two to three years ahead of any potential competition, but that we have the best compound."

First MS pill under consideration

Washington -- A drug by Novartis could become the first pill sold on the U.S. market for the treatment of multiple sclerosis, authorities said.

Gilenia, also called fingolimod, has been shown to significantly reduce relapses in patients with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis, Novartis officials said.

A federal advisory panel is to consider next week whether the Food and Drug Administration should approve the drug for sale in the United States, the San Antonio Express-News reported Friday.

Fingolimod is one of two multiple sclerosis drugs in pill form that have been submitted for FDA approval. Currently, drugs for multiple sclerosis must be injected or infused by patients.

Novartis to appeal sex discrimination case

New York -- Drug giant Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. said it would appeal a court ruling in Manhattan that found the company guilty of widespread sexual discrimination.

The company issued a statement that said it was "disappointed in the jury's verdict and the $3.3 million award to the plaintiffs," the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

A lawyer for the plaintiffs, Katherine Kimpel, said Novartis "is a company stuck in a different century." Awards in the case for 12 plaintiffs ranged from $50,000 to $600,000, but the total could be far higher when a decision is made how much to award 5,600 women who signed onto a class-action case against the company.

The price per share in the new deal is set at $180 per share, up from the $143 per share it paid for the first 23 percent. In addition, it is offering 2.8 Novartis shares for the shares it has yet to purchase, which would value the outstanding Alcon shares at $137.

Alcon is a leading producer of contact lens solutions and medical devices pertaining to eye surgery.

Swine Flu Doesn't Need to Save Novartis

Novartis (NYSE: NVS) has lots of moving parts, making it tricky to analyze, but it looks to me like the overall picture is pretty healthy.
