Montanes tops Davydenko in France

Montpellier, France -- Albert Montanes, taking a pair of tie-breakers, beat top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko and advanced to the semifinals of the Sud de France Open tennis tournament.

Montanes, seeded sixth, stopped Davydenko 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4). Montanes won just 18 points in the first set Friday and fought off eight of 12 break-point chances for Davydenko.

While the No. 1 seed was eliminated the three other top seeds advanced to Saturday's semifinals, although all needed three sets to do so. Montanes will draw fourth-seeded Ivan Ljubicic while No. 2-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga goes against third-seeded Gael Monfils.

Top seeds head to quarterfinals in France

Montpellier, France -- Top seeds Nikolay Davydenko and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga collected second-round wins Wednesday at the Sud de France Open tennis tournament.

Davydenko, seeded first, fought off Mischa Zverev 7-5, 6-3 by saving all 10 of the break-point situations Zverev caused. Davydenko lost 10 points on serve in the first set when he had to deal with seven break points.

The second-seeded Tsonga also didn't lose his serve as he made the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Frederico Gil. Tsonga had 11 aces but the difference in the match was that he won both break points he had against Gil.

Davydenko ousted from Kremlin Cup

Moscow -- Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko dropped two tie-breakers Wednesday and was eliminated from the $1 million Kremlin Cup tennis tournament in Moscow.

Pablo Cuevas edged Davydenko 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5) in second-round play. Each player suffered a service break in each set but Cuevas was able to hang on through the tie-breakers and advance.

He'll draw fifth-seeded Radek Stepanek in the quarterfinals. Stepanek, who had 11 aces, handled Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3, 6-2 without dropping serve in his Wednesday match.

Three top seeds exit Croatia Open

Umag, Croatia -- Top seeds Nikolay Davydenko, Jurgen Melzer and Ivan Ljubicic were all defeated Friday in quarterfinals play of the Croatia Open.

Davydenko, the tournament's top-seed and defending champion, was routed by No. 8-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela 6-2, 6-1 in 65 minutes. Chela broke Davydenko's serve seven times in eight games and took 65 percent of the points in the quarterfinal match.

Friday's schedule included four second-round matches that were rained out Thursday, meaning four players had to battle through two matches Friday. That included the No. 2-seeded Melzer and No. 3 Ljubicic.

Davydenko cruises to Croatia Open win

Umag, Croatia -- Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko had no trouble in his second-round match Wednesday at the Croatia Open tennis tournament.

Davydenko dispatched Stephane Robert 6-1, 6-2 in 53 minutes. Davydenko won 79 percent of the points in the match and lost only nine points in eight service games.

All the seeded players on Wednesday's schedule advanced to Friday's quarterfinals.
No. 8-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela was on the court more than three times longer than Davydenko in his 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (4-7), 6-1 victory over Simone Bolelli.
Chela won all but three of the points off Bolelli's serve in the third set in earning a quarterfinals berth against Davydenko.

Golubev beats German Open No. 1 seed

Hamburg, Germany -- Andrey Golubev defeated top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets Thursday during third-round play of the German Open tennis tournament.

Golubev won 73 percent of the points when he got his first serve in during his 6-4, 6-4 win over Davydenko. Golubev was particularly effective in the first set when he dropped only six points in five service games.

He advances to the quarterfinals against Denis Istomin, whose 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over Julian Reister took move than 2 hours. Istomin had 11 aces and has 28 aces in his three matches in Hamburg.

Third-seeded Jurgen Melzer topped Jeremy Chardy 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) while Potito Starace earned a Friday quarterfinal slot against Melzer with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Pere Riba.

Davydenko wins German Open second-rounder

Hamburg, Germany -- No. 1-seed Nikolay Davydenko breezed through a second-round victory Tuesday at that German Open tennis tournament.

Davydenko defeated Florent Serra 6-3, 6-1 in less than an hour. Davydenko didn't face a break point and lost a mere nine points -- three on double faults -- over eight service games.

Sixth-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero also advanced to the third round, beating Jan Hajek 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 while losing only 13 points in the second set, but three seeded players were beaten.

Top-seed Davydenko beaten in Germany

Stuttgart, Germany -- No. 1-seeded Nikolay Davydenko was ousted Thursday in second-round play of the Mercedes Cup tennis tournament in Germany.

Daniel Gimeno-Traver took Davydenko out 7-6 (9-7), 2-6, 6-1 with a third-set effort in which he won 62 percent of the points. Davydenko, ranked sixth in the world, is the first Top 10 player to lose to the No. 88-ranked Gimeno-Traver.

Third-seeded Gael Monfils escaped an upset with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over Pablo Andujar. Monfils lost just three points in five service games in the decisive third set and grabbed a spot in Friday's quarterfinals.

Davydenko leads Russia into Davis Cup

Moscow -- Top 15 players Nikolay Davydenko and Mikhail Youzhny were given the singles slots for Russia in a Davis Cup semifinal against Argentina.

The Argentines head to Moscow for the best-of-five series Friday-Sunday on an indoor hard court. The winner of the series goes into the Davis Cup semifinals in September against either France or Spain.

Davydenko, No. 6 in the world, is to play David Nalbandian in Friday's first match. Nalbandian is ranked 153rd but that's because his play the last year has been limited by injury.

Friday's second singles match has Youzhny, ranked 14th, going against 58th-ranked Leonardo Mayer.

Davydenko ousted from Halle tournament

Halle, Germany -- Second-seeded Nikolay Davydenko was ousted Thursday in second-round action of the Gerry Weber Open, a grass-court tournament in Germany.

Germany's Benjamin Becker had the only two service breaks of the match in topping Davydenko 6-3, 6-4. Davydenko was playing in his first tournament since March due to a wrist injury.

Becker won only 17 points on Davydenko's serve but grouped enough winners to post a break in each set.

Top-seeded Roger Federer ran his Gerry Weber winning streak to 27 matches with a 6-1, 6-2 romp over Alejandro Falla. Federer lost nine points in eight service games, with most of those coming when Falla managed two break-point chances, although he wasn't able to convert either.

Davydenko, Tsonga win at Dubai

Dubai, United Arab Emirates -- Fourth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko and fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga were first-round winners Tuesday at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Davydenko, of Russia, needed to come from behind to beat Florent Serra of France 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-1. Tsonga, of France, was ahead of compatriot Michael Llodra 7-6 (11-9) when Llodra -- who won last week at Marseille -- retired due to a hamstring injury.

Davydenko advanced to a second-round match against Michael Berrer of Germany. Tsonga moves on to face Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia.

Sixth-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia dropped Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-2, 6-4 and No. 7 Mikhail Youzhny of Russia eliminated Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

Davydenko, Soderling advance at Rotterdam

Rotterdam, Netherlands -- No. 2 seed Nikolay Davydenko of Russia was among Friday's quarterfinal winners at the AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Davydenko, the world's sixth-ranked men's player, topped Austria's Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-2.

Robin Soderling of Sweden, the third seed and 2009 French Open runner-up, trounced France's Julien Benneteau 6-0, 6-1 in 64 minutes, and sixth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia knocked off No. 4 seed Gael Monfils of France 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.

Soderling was so dominant he won 22 of 32 points on Benneteau's serve.

Saturday's semifinals are Davydenko-Soderling and Youzhny against top-seeded Novak Djokovic, the world No. 2 in the latest men's rankings.
