Almagro, Gasquet to meet for Gstaad title

Gstaad, Switzerland -- Spain's Nicolas Almagro and Richard Gasquet of France will face off for the Swiss Open Gstaad title after both won semifinal matches Saturday.

Almagro, seeded second, registered a 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 6-3 victory over fellow Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the first semifinal and No. 7 seed Gasquet moved on with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Yuri Schukin of Kazakhstan in the day's other contest.

In his match against Gimeno-Traver, Almagro needed to save a set point in the first-set tiebreaker before taking the frame. Gimeno-Traver came back with a pair of saves in break-point chances in the second set, but Almagro established a quick 3-0 lead in the third before closing it, advancing to his second final in three events.

Almagro upsets Soderling for Sweden crown

Bastad -- Nicolas Almagro of Spain got in the way of Robin Soderling's hopes for a second straight Swedish Open title Sunday, posting a three-set win in Bastad.

Almagro upset the top-seeded local favorite 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, gaining his sixth career ATP Tour championship and first since Acapulco in February 2009.

Almagro broke serve in Sunday's 11th game and held it in the next game, taking the first set. But Soderling bounced back, winning the first three games of the second set.

The Spaniard responded by gaining the break for a 4-2 lead in the final set and coasted after that, closing out the victory by taking the final two games.

Bellucci, Almagro among Barcelona winners

Barcelona, Spain -- Seeded players Thomaz Bellucci and Nicolas Almagro were among first-round winners Monday at the $2.1 million Barcelona Open in Spain.

Bellucci, seeded 13th, posted a 6-4, 6-4 over Jarkko Nieminen, taking just four more points -- 63-57 -- over the course of the clay-court match but getting two service breaks in each set to advance.

Almagro, the No. 15 seed, had little trouble taking out Santiago Ventura 6-1, 6-2 in 60 minutes. Almagro won 65 percent of the points in the match and didn't face a break point.

Almagro, Verdasco advance in Acapulco

Acapulco, Mexico -- Nicolas Almagro of Spain was a winner in Acapulco Tuesday, beating Israeli Dudi Sela in the opening round of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel tournament.

Almagro, who is seeking his third consecutive title at the clay-court event and is seeded sixth this year, ousted Sela 6-1, 7-6 (0) in 1 hour, 25 minutes.

Tuesday's effort gave Almagro victories in 11 consecutive matches in Acapulco and set the stage for a second-round meeting with France's Richard Gasquet.

Top-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain survived a scare from Italy's Fabio Fognini Tuesday but emerged with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 win. Verdasco, who is ranked No. 10 in the world, saved all six break points in the second set.

Murray, Ferrer advance at Valencia

Valencia, Spain -- Two favorites, top-seeded Andy Murray and reigning champion David Ferrer, advanced in Tuesday's opening round of the Valencia Open in Spain.

Murray, the runner-up in September's U.S. Open, dispatched Spanish wild card Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 6-1, taking only an hour to finish the match. He broke Gimeno-Traver's serve five times in eight tries.

The fourth-ranked Murray didn't appear to be rusty after recovering from an injury to his left wrist and playing for the first time since dropping a fourth-round match at the U.S. Open. He'll next face Argentine Leonardo Mayer.

Almagro among early Vienna winners

Vienna -- Spain's Nicolas Almagro, the No. 5 seed, was among first-round winners Monday in the Bank of Austria Tennis Trophy in Vienna.

Almagro rallied to defeat Australian Peter Luczak 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

Frederico Gil of Portugal eliminated Austrian Stefan Koubek 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Other opening-round winners included German Daniel Brands, American Wayne Odesnik and Romania's Victor Crivoi.

Querrey first to reach third round

New Haven, Conn. Aug. 25: Sam Querrey, who at No. 6 was the only seeded player in action Monday, survived a three-set match to reach the third round of the Pilot Pen in New Haven, Conn.

Querrey outlasted Marc Gicquel 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 to become the first player to earn a berth in the tournament's third round. He set up an encounter with either ninth-seeded Nicolas Almagro or Bjorn Phau.

Among the first-round surprises Monday were Frederico Gil's 6-4, 6-3 decision over Marcos Baghdatis and a win for Rajeev Ram over Nicolas Lapentti 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3).

Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko will be in action Tuesday for a second-round match with Robert Kendrick. No. 2 seed Fernando Verdasco will take on Paul Capdeville.

Soderling loses German Open match

Hamburg, Germany -- French Open runner-up Robin Soderling lost in straight sets to 14th-seeded Nicolas Almagro Thursday in the third round of the German Open tennis tournament.

The 7-5, 6-3 setback dropped the Swede's overall record this season to 26-13 and followed his title at last week's Swedish Open.

Second-seeded Nikolay Davydenko beat Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-3 6-3; No. 6 David Ferrer beat Juan Monaco 4-6 7-5 6-2; unseeded Pablo Cuevas topped No. 8 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 7-6 (10-8); 10th-seeded Viktor Troicki downed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). Also, 11th-seeded Victor Hanescu beat Julien Benneteau 3-6, 6-3, 6-3; No. 13 Paul-Henri Mathieu topped Daniel Brands, 7-5, 7-5; and Simon Greul beat Ivan Navarro 7-5, 7-6 (9-7).

Robredo makes Swedish Open semifinals

Bastad, Sweden July 17: Reigning champion Tommy Robredo was one of four quarterfinal winners Friday at the Swedish Open tennis tournament in Bastad.

Robredo, the third seed, beat Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-4, 6-0 to advance to a semifinal match Saturday against Juan Monaco. Monaco held a 6-1, 3-1 lead over ninth-seeded Fernando Verdasco when Verdasco retired due to a right calf injury.

"In the first game of the match, I pulled a muscle in my calf," Verdasco said in a statement on the men's tennis Web site. "It was really hard to play after that. I had real pain when serving."

Nadal rolls into French Open fourth round

Paris -- Four-time defending champion Rafael Nadal dropped just five games in a third-round victory Friday at the French Open in Paris.

Nadal, ranked No. 1 in the world, extended his winning streak to 31 matches at Roland Garros with a 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 pasting of Lleyton Hewitt.

Hewitt took a 40-0 lead in his first service game but Nadal came back and got the break in a sign of how the day was to unfold. Nadal lost just four points on his own serve in the first set and 18 in the match.

Nadal next takes on No. 23-seeded Robin Soderling, who recorded a 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) upset of 14th-seeded David Ferrer on Friday.

Almagro wins Acapulco men's final

Acapulco, Mexico -- Nicolas Almagro beat Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-4 to win Saturday's men's final at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel (Mexican Open) tennis tournament in Acapulco.

The fourth-seeded Spaniard captured his fifth career title and got revenge on his French opponent for a loss this year at the Australian Open.

Almagro's victory was worth $300,000 and gave him five career titles.

Monfils, the No. 2 seed, was denied his second career title.

Defending champ Almagro wins first-round

Costa Do Sauipe, Brazil -- Defending champion Nicolas Almagro of Spain beat Brazilian wild card Ricardo Hocevar 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 in Monday's first round at the Brasil Open.

The top-seeded Almagro, who beat Spaniard Carlos Moya in last year's finale here, drew a second-round match against Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello, a winner over Chilean Nicolas Massu 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-4.

Also Monday, fifth seed Marcel Granollers of Spain beat Brazilian wild card Flavio Saretta, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1; sixth-seeded Argentine Eduardo Schwank beat fellow countryman Diego Junqueira, 6-1, 7-5; and Spaniard Alberto Martin beat Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti, 6-4, 7-5.
