Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) announced on Friday that it's purchased Widevine, a video digital rights management company mostly known as the technology behind Netflix's video protection. Widevine gives video sites the tools to license, encrypt, and distribute videos to a variety of device platforms.

New York -- NBC says it plans to air "Will & Kate: A Royal Love Story" in honor of British Prince William's recent engagement to Kate Middleton.
The couple are to marry in London next spring or summer, royal officials said Tuesday.
NBC's hourlong "Dateline" special is set for broadcast Wednesday.
The program will take a special look at how the couple met, what drew them to each other and what their modern-day marriage will mean for the British monarchy. It includes interviews with longtime friends and exclusive video of the future princess, NBC said in a news release Tuesday.

New York -- NBC said Monday it has picked up its U.S. comedy series "30 Rock" for a sixth season to air through 2012.
The announcement was made by Angela Bromstad, president of prime time entertainment at NBC and Universal Media Studios.
"We are happy to confirm the pickup of '30 Rock' for another season," Bromstad said in a statement. "It continues to be a bold, hilarious, sophisticated comedy that has become a classic in its own time."
The pickup comes as "30 Rock" celebrates its 100th episode, to air this season.
The show stars Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski.

New York -- "Today" arts editor and critic Gene Shalit is leaving the morning TV program after more than 40 years, NBC announced Tuesday.
A tribute to the 85-year-old TV personality and his work is to air Thursday.
"Gene is not just a 'Today' show treasure, but a television legend and an American icon. We salute him for his unprecedented 40-year run on a single television program, a feat unlikely to ever be matched," "Today" executive producer Jim Bell said in a statement.

Universal City, Calif. -- NBC says it has picked up its U.S. daytime drama "Days of Our Lives" for two more years through the 2012-13 television season.
Jeff Gaspin, chairman of NBC Universal Television Entertainment, made the announcement Monday, the day the show celebrated its 45th year on the air.
"'Days of Our Lives' remains vitally creative through the years as it continues to draw new generations of viewers, especially among its loyal female audience," Gaspin said in a statement. "NBC salutes the series on its 45th anniversary and we look forward with great anticipation to working with the production team for the years to come."

Universal- NBC has announced plans to air a Thanksgiving night music special starring U.S. country superstar Taylor Swift.
"Taylor Swift -- Speak Now" is to be broadcast Nov. 25.
The network said the program will take "fans on a whirlwind trip from New York City to Los Angeles with multiple one-of-a-kind performances including a concert 30,000 feet in the air on the plane ride across country.
"The special also features behind-the-scenes access to the recording studio and video shoot, autograph signings, appearances, paparazzi dodging -- and all the mayhem viewers expect surrounding the Grammy-winning superstar," NBC said.

Los Angeles -- NBC has announced it ordered full seasons of its new series "The Event," "Law & Order: Los Angeles" and "Outsourced."
"We are pleased with the quality of 'The Event,' 'Law & Order: Los Angeles' and 'Outsourced,' and feel they are an important part of helping to rebuild our schedule and our studio pipeline," Angela Bromstad, NBC's entertainment president, said in a statement. "We believe in these new series and the creative auspices behind them."
The Hollywood Reporter said it was unclear whether the shows "Chuck," "Chase" and "Undercovers" would be picked up for full seasons.

The network halted production last week on Jimmy Smits's latest show.
The series has since been moved from its Friday-night schedule to Saturdays through Nov. 13 when the last episode will air, Zap2it.com said.
In the show, Smits plays a U.S. Supreme Court justice who quits his post to open his own law firm.
The actor's previous TV credits include "The West Wing" and "LA Law."
